Chapter 7 - The Gala at the Drake Hotel: Stepping Into the Viper’s Den

The Grand Ballroom of the Drake Hotel was a cathedral of gilded excess.
Crystal chandeliers hung like frozen waterfalls from the vaulted ceiling, casting shimmering light across three hundred guests dressed in black-tie attire. The air was thick with the scent of expensive champagne, vintage cigars, and high-society arrogance. Judges, city aldermen, logistics moguls, and high-ranking syndicate bosses mingled with practiced, deceptive smiles.
At the top of the grand marble staircase, the master of ceremonies announced the arrivals.
“Mr. Gabriel Vale, Chief Executive of Vale Maritime Logistics, and Miss Claire Mercer.”
A sudden, palpable hush rippled across the crowded ballroom.
Heads turned. Conversations faltered in mid-sentence.
Gabriel descended the grand staircase with the lethal, effortless grace of a king entering conquered territory. But it was the woman on his arm that caused wine glasses to freeze midway to patrons' lips.
Claire walked down the marble steps with absolute poise. The emerald velvet gown shimmered under the chandeliers, accentuating every lush, powerful curve of her body. Her head was held high, her hazel eyes glittering with intelligence and calm authority. The emerald around her neck sparkled like captured fire.
Whispers erupted instantly among the tables.
“Is that Richard Mercer’s daughter?”
“The one they kept locked in the back office?”
“My God, she looks stunning... and terrifying.”
“Look at how Vale holds her. He never brings women to these events.”
Near the VIP champagne bar, Dante Moretti stood surrounded by his personal bodyguards.
Moretti was fifty, silver-haired, impeccably tailored, and known for his psychopathic ruthlessness. When he saw Claire walking beside Gabriel, the champagne flute in his hand cracked under the sudden pressure of his grip.
He had sent four elite assassins to kill her six hours ago. And now she was walking into his gala on the arm of the most dangerous man in the Midwest, wearing jewels worth more than his Gary distribution hub.
Gabriel guided Claire through the parting crowd toward the center of the room. Men who normally dominated boardrooms bowed their heads with nervous respect as Gabriel passed.
“You’re doing perfectly,” Gabriel murmured to her, his hand resting securely over hers on his forearm.
“I know fifty people in this room who ignored my invoices for three years,” Claire whispered back with a sharp, subtle smile. “It’s amazing how polite they become when you’re standing next to me.”
“They aren't just afraid of me, Claire,” Gabriel said softly, looking down at her with genuine pride. “They see a woman who knows where all the bodies are buried in their ledgers.”
Suddenly, a commotion near the side entrance broke the room’s rhythm.
Evan Mercer had managed to slip past security.
Evan was disheveled, his tuxedo jacket rumpled, his eyes bloodshot with frantic desperation. Following Moretti’s abandoned extraction, Evan had used the last of his hidden cash to bribe a doorman at the Drake, desperate to corner Dante Moretti before Gabriel’s men tracked him down.
When Evan’s eyes landed on Claire, his jaw dropped in disbelief and pure, unadulterated rage.
“Claire?!” Evan’s voice cut through the soft string quartet music, shrill and unhinged.
The ballroom fell dead silent.
Evan shoved past a waiter, storming toward the center of the floor, pointing a shaking, accusatory finger at his sister.
“What the hell are you doing here?!” Evan screamed, his face contorted in bitter humiliation. “Look at you! Playing dress-up like you’re royalty! You’re a thief! You’re an ugly, worthless basement rat who stole four million dollars from our father!”
The room gasped.

Claire did not flinch. She did not shrink back. She didn't drop her head.
She simply released Gabriel’s arm, took two measured steps forward in her emerald gown, and looked her brother dead in the eye.
