Chapter 4 - Shadows at the Mercer Estate and the Father’s Desperate Gamble

Deep beneath the south side of Chicago, inside the concrete holding cells of District Four, Richard Mercer was losing his mind.

The cell was cold, illuminated only by a single flickering fluorescent bulb. The air smelled of damp stone and copper. Richard sat on a steel bench, clutching his bruised ribs, while Evan paced frantically across the floor, running his hands through his disheveled hair.

“This is your fault!” Evan hissed, kicking the heavy iron door. “I told you we should have caught the flight to Miami yesterday! I told you Vale wouldn't buy the story about Claire!”

“Shut up!” Richard snapped, his face pale and sweating. “Claire was supposed to break! She’s a coward! She has always done what I told her to do! How was I supposed to know Vale would listen to that pathetic little wretch?”

“Because she’s a freak with numbers, Dad!” Evan yelled back, his voice cracking with hysteria. “She memorized the whole damn ledger! Vale knows everything! He knows about Obsidian Maritime!”

The heavy bolts on the cell door groaned, and the steel swung open.

Marcus stepped inside, accompanied by two hulking guards in Kevlar vests. He held a sleek black smartphone in his hand.

“Your one phone call,” Marcus said, extending the device toward Richard with a mocking smile. “Make it count, Mercer. Mr. Vale has already seized your freight terminals, your fleet of fifty-two semi-trucks, and your estate in Highland Park. As of twenty minutes ago, Mercer Freight is legally bankrupt.”

Richard’s face drained of what little color remained. “You can't do that! The corporate charters are protected!”

“Your daughter signed the receivership transfer two hours ago,” Marcus lied smoothly, watching Richard writhe. “She’s Mr. Vale’s new Chief Auditor. Turns out she’s much better at business than you are.”

Evan lunged toward Marcus, but the butt of a guard’s shotgun slammed hard into his stomach, dropping him to the floor, wheezing and clutching his abdomen.

Richard snatched the phone with trembling fingers. He didn't call a lawyer. He didn't call the police. He dialed an encrypted ten-digit international number that he had memorized for emergencies.

The line clicked.

“Speak,” a cold, aristocratic voice answered from the other end.

“Dante,” Richard gasped into the receiver, pressing the phone tight against his ear. “It’s Richard Mercer. Vale took us. He took the terminals.”

A long pause hung on the line. Dante Moretti’s voice was smooth as venom. “Why are you calling this number from a compromised line, Richard?”

“Vale knows about the Gary corridor!” Richard cried desperately. “Claire... Claire betrayed us! She’s with Vale right now at his Lake Shore penthouse! She’s decrypting the Obsidian Maritime servers! She has the access keys to your shipping containers arriving at Port District Four tomorrow night!”

The silence from Dante Moretti’s end became heavy, lethal.

“Your daughter has my manifests?”

“Yes! She knows every routing code!” Richard pleaded. “Break us out of here, Dante! Send your extraction team! We can still get the cargo out before Vale seizes the docks! Just get Evan and me out of the country!”

“Your daughter is a liability, Richard,” Moretti said softly. “You told me she was a meek, terrified girl who wouldn't dare look at a ledger without your permission.”

“She lied to us! She played dumb for years!” Richard screamed.

“I don’t care about your family drama,” Moretti replied coldly. “If Claire Mercer has my manifests, she dies. If she dies, Gabriel Vale has no legal or financial proof to seize my shipments at the port. I will handle Miss Mercer. As for you and your son... you have outlived your usefulness.”

The line went dead.

Richard stared at the black screen, his hands shaking violently as the phone slipped from his fingers and shattered against the concrete floor.

“Dad?” Evan choked out from the floor, coughing up blood. “What did Moretti say? Is he sending help?”

Richard slowly slid down the stone wall, burying his face in his hands as absolute dread consumed him. “He isn't sending help, Evan. He’s sending an executioner.”
