Chapter 12 - The Traitor in the Shadows and the Sanctuary Breached

The morning brought a deceptive calm to the city.

Federal authorities announced the complete dismantling of Obsidian Maritime Holdings, freezing over two hundred million dollars in syndicate assets across three continents. Dante Moretti had become a ghost, his compound raided, his lieutenants fleeing the state.

At 11:00 AM, Claire prepared to visit the private medical clinic Gabriel owned in Lincoln Park for a routine follow-up on her bruised ribs and cut hand.

Gabriel was scheduled to meet with the state attorney general to finalize the asset forfeitures that would officially transfer Mercer Freight’s legitimate logistics contracts to Claire’s name.

“I’ll have Marcus and four security units escort you,” Gabriel said, kissing Claire’s forehead in the private garage. “I will join you at the clinic in two hours.”

“I’ll be fine, Gabriel,” Claire smiled, feeling stronger and more confident than she ever had. “It’s just an X-ray.”

Gabriel watched the armored SUV pull out of the garage, an inexplicable tightness gripping his chest.

Thirty minutes later, Claire arrived at the high-end Lincoln Park medical facility. The clinic was quiet, staffed entirely by Gabriel’s trusted private medical personnel.

Claire sat in a private examination room on the third floor while Marcus stood guard outside the hallway door.

Suddenly, the fire alarms throughout the building shrieked into life.

SCREECH! SCREECH!

Dense, white smoke began pouring through the ventilation shafts.

Marcus immediately drew his weapon, kicking open the exam room door. “Miss Mercer! We’re moving out! It’s a chemical suppression breach!”

Before Claire could stand, the heavy glass window of the examination room was breached from the outside by tactical grapple lines.

Two flashbang grenades detonated with blinding, deafening force.

BANG! BANG!

Marcus fired three shots through the smoke, but a hail of automatic fire struck him in his Kevlar vest, knocking him backward into the corridor.

Claire stumbled through the blinding smoke, coughing violently, her hand reaching for the emergency panic button on the wall.

A heavy, gloved hand clamped tightly over her mouth, while a cold cloth soaked in chloroform was pressed hard against her nose.

Claire fought with everything she had, clawing at the assailant’s arms, but the chemical fumes hit her bloodstream instantly. Her vision blurred, her limbs turned to lead, and the world dissolved into blackness.

The last thing she heard before losing consciousness was a familiar, raspy voice whispering in the smoke:

“You should have signed the papers in the basement, Claire.”

It was her father.
