Chapter 11 - The Blood Oath and the Confession by the Fireplace

By 4:00 AM, the fire at Port District Four was extinguished, Moretti’s mercenaries were in federal custody, and the sixty-million-dollar contraband shipment was safely impounded.

Gabriel returned to the Lake Shore penthouse. He smelled of rain, smoke, and cold steel.

When he stepped through the front doors, Claire was waiting in the great room. The moment she saw him walk in unharmed, she dropped the tablet she was holding and ran across the room.

She didn't stop. She didn't hesitate.

Claire threw her arms around Gabriel’s neck, burying her face into the damp wool of his coat, her whole body trembling with raw emotional relief.

Gabriel wrapped his strong arms around her waist, lifting her slightly off her feet and pulling her tightly against his chest. He buried his face in her soft chestnut hair, breathing in the scent of lavender and warmth that had become his only anchor in a world of violence.

“You’re safe,” Claire sobbed against his neck. “I thought I was too late.”

“You’re never too late, Claire,” Gabriel murmured, his voice thick with an emotion he had spent twenty years burying deep beneath his armor.

He carried her gently toward the slate fireplace, setting her down on the deep plush sofa. The fire crackled softly, casting golden, dancing shadows across the high ceilings.

Gabriel knelt on the floor before her, taking both of her hands into his large, scarred palms.

“All my life,” Gabriel began softly, his dark eyes searching hers with complete vulnerability, “I have been surrounded by people who wanted something from me. My father taught me that power is the only thing that matters, and that love is a weakness that gets you killed.”

Claire looked at him, her hazel eyes glistening with tears.

“When Richard Mercer brought you to that warehouse,” Gabriel continued, his thumbs gently stroking the backs of her hands, “I thought you were just another piece in a dirty game. But you showed me something I haven't seen in twenty years.”

“What?” Claire whispered.

“Honor,” Gabriel said. “Brilliance. A woman who was broken, starved, and betrayed by everyone she trusted, yet refused to let them destroy her soul.”

He reached up, his rough fingers gently cupping her soft cheek, wiping away a stray tear with his thumb.

“You didn't just save my business tonight, Claire. You saved me from becoming a monster who destroys everything he touches.”

Claire’s breath hitched. She leaned into his touch, feeling the heat and strength of the man who had torn Chicago apart just to make sure she was safe.

“You made me feel like a human being, Gabriel,” Claire whispered, her voice trembling with love. “You looked at me when everyone else looked away. You gave me a voice.”

“Your voice is the only thing I want to hear for the rest of my life,” Gabriel said.

He leaned in slowly, giving her every opportunity to pull away.

Claire didn't move away. She leaned forward, closing the distance between them.

When Gabriel’s lips met hers, the world outside the glass tower vanished completely. The kiss was deep, fiercely passionate, and filled with a desperate, protective tenderness that shattered the last remaining walls around Claire’s heart.

In that warm, firelit room, with the storm raging harmlessly over Lake Michigan, Claire Mercer finally knew what it felt like to be cherished, desired, and completely, undeniably safe.
