Chapter 10 - Midnight Ambush at Port District Four

The rain over Lake Michigan turned into a freezing sleet as Gabriel’s convoy approached Port District Four.
Gabriel had insisted on leading the perimeter security team himself, leaving Claire safely behind at the high-security Lake Shore penthouse under the watchful eye of Mrs. Gable and six elite guards.
The industrial port was a labyrinth of rusted steel containers, towering cranes, and slick asphalt. High above the tarmac, Moretti’s six target containers dangled harmlessly in mid-air from the automated crane cables Claire had locked down.
Marcus and the tactical team had already surrounded the main shipping office, securing the port authority records without firing a single shot.
Gabriel stepped out of his armored SUV, his heavy woolen coat whipping in the freezing wind. He surveyed the yard with sharp, calculating eyes.
Something felt wrong.
The yard was too quiet. The private security guards Moretti normally employed were nowhere to be seen.
Suddenly, Gabriel’s encrypted radio earpiece crackled with Claire’s urgent voice from the command center.
“Gabriel! Get out of there! It’s a trap!”
Gabriel pressed his radio. “Claire, report.”
“I was running a secondary diagnostics check on the port’s electrical grid!” Claire said, her voice laced with panic. “Moretti didn't rig thermite to the containers—he bypassed the terminal substation! There’s an auxiliary fuel line running beneath Dock Twelve! He’s going to blow the entire pier!”
Before Gabriel could shout an order to evacuate, a massive explosion tore through the southern fuel depot three hundred yards away.
BOOM!
A wall of orange fire and black smoke billowed into the night sky, violently shaking the asphalt beneath Gabriel’s boots.
Automatic gunfire erupted from the shadows of the surrounding container stacks. Moretti’s remaining mercenary strike force, abandoned by their boss and desperate for survival, opened fire on Gabriel’s convoy from elevated sniper perches atop the shipping crates.
“Take cover!” Gabriel roared, unholstering his weapon and dropping behind the engine block of the armored SUV as heavy armor-piercing rounds shattered the windshield.
Two of Gabriel’s men returned fire with suppressing bursts, but Moretti’s shooters had the high ground, pinning the team down near the edge of the freezing channel.
Back at the penthouse command center, Claire watched the thermal satellite feed turn into a chaotic mess of muzzle flashes and heat signatures.
“No, no, no,” Claire gasped, her hands flying across the keyboard.
She pulled up the port’s high-pressure industrial fire suppression and floodlight systems.
With three rapid keystrokes, Claire remotely overrode the port’s master electrical relays.
Instantly, forty stadium-grade floodlights along Dock Twelve snapped on, swiveling downward and blinding Moretti’s snipers with ten million lumens of piercing white light. Simultaneously, Claire activated the automated foam fire-suppression cannons atop the gantry cranes.
Thousands of gallons of thick, blinding industrial foam rained down upon Moretti’s shooters, suffocating their firing positions and stripping away their cover.
Taking immediate advantage of the chaos Claire created, Gabriel and Marcus surged forward with ruthless precision.
Gabriel fired four perfectly placed shots through the blinded sniper line, dropping two gunmen instantly while Marcus and the strike team flanked the remaining mercenaries, disarming and neutralizing the threat in less than two minutes.
The port fell silent, save for the crackle of the distant fuel fire and the hum of the overhead cranes.
Gabriel stood amidst the smoke and foam, his weapon lowered, his breath misting in the freezing air. He tapped his earpiece, his heart pounding in his chest—not from the battle, but from the realization of what she had just done.
“Claire,” Gabriel breathed into the comms.
May you like
“Gabriel?” Her voice was shaking, on the verge of tears. “Are you alive? Are you hurt?”
Gabriel closed his eyes for a brief moment, a deep, overwhelming sense of gratitude washing over him. “I’m alive, Claire. You just saved my life.”
