Red emergency strobe lights began flashing.

Marco burst through the double doors, holding an automatic rifle.

“Boss! Perimeter breach on the forty-fifth floor!”

Lorenzo didn't panic.

His movements were terrifyingly calm.

“How?” Lorenzo asked.

“Internal security code,” Marco panted.

“Someone bypassed the biometric scanners.”

Lorenzo’s eyes narrowed into slits.

“Marcus.”

“He’s already gone to the armory,” Marco reported.

Clara scrambled away from the table.

“Who is Marcus?” she asked.

“My head of security,” Lorenzo said, drawing a pistol from his holster.

“Or so I thought.”

Gunfire echoed from the hallway outside.

Heavy boots pounded against the hardwood floors.

“Stay under the table,” Lorenzo ordered Clara.

“I’m not hiding,” Clara snapped, grabbing a heavy brass candlestick.

“You’ll get yourself killed.”

“I’m already in the middle of a war!”

Before Lorenzo could argue, the dining room doors blew inward.

Splinters rained across the room.
