Chapter 14 - THE ASHES OF THE PAST

Sirens wailed in the distance, growing louder by the second.

Federal agents and local police swarmed the warehouse doors.

Marco and his co-conspirators were rounded up in cuffs.

Elena ran into her brother’s arms, weeping tears of pure relief.

Lorenzo held her tightly, then looked across the room at Clara.

He walked over through the puddles of rain water.

“You could have died tonight,” Lorenzo said softly, his gray eyes searching her face.

“I’m good at dodging trouble,” Clara replied, trying to catch her breath.

“You saved my sister.”

“I saved myself, too.”

Lorenzo reached out, gently touching the cut on Clara’s palm.

“Your debt to me is paid in full, Clara.”

“What about Maya’s medical care?”

“Dr. Evans will oversee her treatment for as long as she needs it,” Lorenzo promised.

“And your apartment?”

“You can keep it.”

“Or you can move into a place where the locks actually work.”

Clara looked up into his hardened, yet strangely gentle face.

“I think I’m done with mafia landlords, Mr. Moretti.”

A rare, genuine smile broke across Lorenzo’s face.

“Call me Lorenzo.”
