Chapter 8 - A DANGEROUS DINNER WITH THE DEVIL

Midnight arrived with a renewed downpour.

Lightning flashed across the Manhattan skyline.

Inside the penthouse dining room, silver cutlery gleamed under a crystal chandelier.

Clara sat at the opposite end of a massive oak table.

A plate of roasted duck sat untouched before her.

Lorenzo poured two glasses of red wine.

“You must eat,” Lorenzo said.

“I have no appetite for mafia dinners,” Clara replied coldly.

“You need your strength.”

“Tell me about your sister.”

Lorenzo paused, his hand resting on the bottleneck.

“Elena was the only reason I survived our father’s empire.”

“When he died, I took the throne to protect her.”

“She wanted a normal life.”

“She fell in love with an outsider.”

“Our father ordered him killed.”

Clara watched the shadow cross Lorenzo’s face.

“That was when she ran away,” Clara deduced.

“Yes,” Lorenzo nodded.

“And your mother sheltered her.”

“Joanne Vance was a brave woman.”

“She kept Elena hidden for a decade.”

“Until Morena’s men tracked the signals.”

Clara pushed her plate away.

“If Morena has Elena, why hasn't he killed her?”

“Because she locked the digital offshore ledgers.”

“Without her biometric authorization, the money is frozen.”

Lorenzo’s gray eyes locked onto hers.

“And Morena believes your mother gave the backup key to you.”
