Chapter 6 - Stranded in Paradise

The heat in Cancun was oppressive, but inside the cheap, run-down motel three miles away from the hotel zone, the air was stagnant.

Julian and Melissa had been forced to slip out of the Grand Fiesta Americana through the service exit, leaving all of their designer luggage and purchases behind to avoid being arrested by the hotel security. They were now sitting in a room that smelled of damp concrete and old insecticide, with only the clothes on their backs and a single backpack containing their passports and Julian's laptop.

"I can't believe this," Melissa wept, sitting on the edge of a stained mattress. Her beautiful silk dress was wrinkled and dirty, and her expensive makeup had smeared across her face. "You said you had everything under control! You said Clara was stupid!"

"Shut up, Melissa!" Julian snapped, his face red with frustration as he stared at his laptop screen. "She’s blocked my IP address from the company servers. I can't even access the backup files. She’s completely wiped my digital footprints from the firm."

"Well, what are we going to do?" she screamed, standing up and shoving his shoulder. "We have three hundred dollars left! We can't buy food, we can't buy plane tickets, and we can't stay in this dump forever! The tourist police are looking for us!"

"I told you to shut up!" Julian roared, turning on her with a sudden, vicious glare that made her step back. The romantic illusion that had fueled their affair for the past year had vanished, replaced by the ugly, raw survival instinct of two rats trapped in a cage. "This was your idea, too! You're the one who wanted the luxury lifestyle! You're the one who insisted we take the trust money!"

"Because you said it would be easy!" Melissa yelled back, tears streaming down her face. "You said she was a weak, pathetic housewife who wouldn't have the courage to fight back! You said she would just cry and file for divorce like a good little victim!"

"She's not a victim," Julian whispered, a sudden, cold realization wash over him. He looked at the cracked window of the motel room, watching the shadow of a local police cruiser pass by on the street below. "She’s her father's daughter. And we are in a lot of trouble."
