Chapter 3 - The Cold Reality of the Embezzlement

The FBI field office in Richmond, Virginia, was a sterile environment of grey carpet, fluorescent lights, and the hum of server racks. I sat in a small conference room, a paper cup of bitter black coffee sitting untouched in front of me.
Agent Robert Vance—no relation to my late husband's family, though the irony wasn't lost on me—sat opposite me, a thick manila folder open between us. He was a sharp-eyed man in his late forties, his suit perfectly tailored, his demeanor that of a predator waiting for the right moment to strike.
"Your husband was thorough, Mrs. Vance," Agent Vance said, tapping a finger on a printout of bank transactions. "He didn't just steal the four hundred thousand from the trust. Over the past eighteen months, he has been slowly funneling money out of your family's real estate firm. He used dummy invoices, fake contractors, and shell companies. The total amount we've verified so far is closer to two point eight million dollars."
I took a slow, deep breath. "Two point eight million."
"Yes. And your former friend, Melissa Sinclair, wasn't just a passive partner in this. She was the registered agent for three of the shell companies. She’s the one who set up the accounts in Belize and the Caymans. They’ve been planning this for a very long time."
I looked at the photos of Julian and Melissa that the agent pushed across the table. They were surveillance stills from the international terminal at Miami International Airport, taken during their layover. Julian looked relaxed, wearing a designer linen shirt, his arm draped around Melissa’s shoulders. Melissa was laughing, holding a glass of champagne, a brand-new diamond tennis bracelet glittering on her wrist.
A bracelet bought with my money.
"They thought they were being clever," Agent Vance continued. "By fleeing to Mexico, they hoped to tie us up in extradition red tape. But they made one critical mistake."
"The credit cards," I said.
"Exactly. When you canceled those cards, you didn't just stop their spending. You locked down the primary account they were using to access the offshore funds. Because of the security protocols on your family's trust, the offshore bank in Belize froze the incoming transfer of the four hundred thousand dollars pending your personal verification. Julian and Melissa are currently stranded in Cancun with less than five hundred dollars in cash and a mountain of unpaid luxury hotel bills."

I leaned back in my chair, a small, cold smile touching my lips. "They wanted to live like royalty on my dime. Now they're just two thieves in paradise with no way to pay for their crown."
"We need your help to lure them back, Clara," Agent Vance said, leaning forward. "If they stay in Mexico, it could take months to bring them back. But if they think they can get the money unlocked... they’ll come back to the US on their own."
