Chapter 5 - Clara’s Hidden Strength

I returned to my quiet, empty house in the afternoon. The smell of fresh paint and wood dust from the locksmith’s work still hung in the air. I walked into the kitchen, poured myself a glass of water, and sat at the island where Julian and I had eaten breakfast together for twenty-five years.
I didn't feel like crying.
When you spend a quarter of a century with a man, you think you know the shape of his soul. But looking back, the signs had always been there. Julian was a man who hungered for a life he hadn't earned. He was a middle-tier attorney who had married into my father's real estate empire, always acting as if my family's wealth was a burden he was doing us a favor by managing.
He had spent decades trying to make me feel small, clumsy, and old. He wanted me to believe that without him, I would be lost in the world.
He had underestimated me.
My father, a self-made developer who had built half of Richmond from the ground up, had taught me a simple lesson before he passed: "Clara, never let anyone see your cards until the game is already won. Let them think you're sleeping while you're building the trap."
The phone on the counter buzzed, interrupting my thoughts.
The caller ID displayed an international number from Mexico.
I let it ring. Once. Twice. Three times. On the fifth ring, I picked it up, keeping my voice perfectly flat, devoid of any anger or hurt.
"Hello?" I said.
"Clara! Oh my god, Clara, thank god you answered!" Julian’s voice came through the speaker, desperate and breathless. He sounded like a drowning man grasping at a floating branch. "Clara, listen to me. There’s been a terrible mistake. A massive misunderstanding."
"A misunderstanding, Julian?" I asked, taking a slow sip of my water. "You sent me a text message saying you left with my best friend and that you weren't coming back. Which part of that was the misunderstanding?"
"I was drunk, Clara! We were both drunk!" Julian lied, his voice rising in pitch. "Melissa... she set me up. She took my phone and sent that text. She’s been blackmailing me, Clara! She threatened to expose some corporate secrets if I didn't come to Mexico with her. I only came to protect you! To protect the family business!"
I closed my eyes for a brief second, amazed at the sheer, pathetic cowardice of the man I had loved. "You went to protect me, Julian? Is that why you emptied my father's trust account and transferred it to Belize?"
The line went dead silent. The only sound was Julian's heavy, terrified breathing.

"I... I can explain that," he stammered. "It was... it was a temporary transfer to protect the funds from a federal audit. Clara, please. The hotel has made a mistake with our cards. I need you to call the bank and authorize the Belize transfer. Just for twenty-four hours. Then I’ll come home. I’ll make this right. I swear."
"Good luck, Julian," I said, and hung up the phone.
