Chapter 14 - The Final Courtroom Showdown

The trial of Julian Vance and Melissa Sinclair concluded three months later. The courtroom was packed, with the local media calling it the "Cancun Conspiracy."

I sat in the front row, wearing a simple, elegant dark suit. I didn't look at Julian or Melissa as they were led in, their hands and feet chained.

The judge, a stern woman with a reputation for harsh sentences on white-collar crimes, adjusted her glasses and looked down at the defendants.

"Julian Vance, you are a man who had everything—a loving wife, a successful career, and a position of trust within this community," the judge said, her voice echoing through the silent courtroom. "Instead, you chose a path of greed, deceit, and profound betrayal. You stole from the very family that supported you, and you fled the country like a coward."

"For the charges of federal wire fraud and grand larceny, I sentence you to eighteen years in a federal penitentiary, with no possibility of parole."

Carter gasped, his face turning gray as the bailiff tightened his grip on his shoulder.

The judge turned to Melissa. "Melissa Sinclair, you betrayed a friendship of fifteen years for a fleeting dream of luxury. You active participated in a systematic scheme to ruin a woman who had treated you like a sister. For your crimes, I sentence you to twelve years."

As the bailiffs led them away, Melissa looked back at me, her eyes filled with a desperate, silent plea for mercy.

I simply looked away, picking up my handbag and walking out of the courtroom into the bright afternoon sun.
