Chapter 13 - The Unraveling of the Co-Conspirators

Two days after the arrest, I sat behind the two-way mirror in the interrogation room of the Richmond federal courthouse.

On the other side of the glass sat Julian. He looked completely defeated, wearing an orange jumpsuit, his hands cuffed to the metal table. His expensive attorney had already abandoned him, replaced by a cynical public defender who looked like he would rather be anywhere else.

"I can give you the names of the offshore brokers!" Julian pleaded, his voice cracking as he leaned toward the prosecutor. "I can give you everything! It was Melissa’s idea! She’s the one who set up the shell companies! She threatened to expose my billing files if I didn't help her steal the trust money!"

Agent Vance, who was standing beside me in the viewing room, scoffed. "He’s singing like a canary. He’s already blame-shifted everything onto Melissa."

"And what about Melissa?" I asked, my voice calm.

"She was extradited from Mexico yesterday," Vance replied, switching the monitor feed to display the adjacent room.

In that room sat Melissa. She looked unrecognizable. Her designer lifestyle was gone, replaced by the harsh reality of a federal detention facility. She was weeping hysterically, her face covered in her hands.

"He told me he loved me!" Melissa wailed to her investigator. "He told me Clara was a monster! He said she was abusive and that he wanted to escape! He's the one who stole the money! I didn't know it was illegal! I thought it was his personal inheritance!"

I watched them both, the two people who had spent a year plotting my destruction, now tearing each other apart like wild animals in a cage.

"They deserve each other," I whispered.

"They do," Agent Vance agreed, turning off the monitor. "They’re both looking at fifteen to twenty years in a federal penitentiary. The evidence we have is absolute, Clara. Your father’s legacy is secure."
