Chapter 4 - The Cancun Crisis Begins

The afternoon sun over the Caribbean Sea was a brilliant, blinding blue, but inside the presidential suite of the Grand Fiesta Americana in Cancun, the atmosphere was violent.

Melissa Sinclair stood on the private balcony, her face flushed with anger as she hurled a crystal glass against the tiled floor. The glass shattered into a thousand glittering shards, mimicking the state of her nerves.

"What do you mean, declined?!" she screamed, turning on Julian, who was pacing frantically across the marble floor of the suite, three different phones lined up on the glass coffee table.

"I mean the black card is dead, Melissa!" Julian snapped, his voice tight with panic. He ran a hand through his thinning hair, his usual polished, arrogant demeanor completely gone. "The front desk just called. They tried to run the card for the yacht charter and the room deposit for the next two weeks. It came back with a 'stolen' code. They're threatening to call the tourist police if we don't provide an alternative payment method within the hour."

"Well, use the offshore account!" Melissa yelled, her voice losing all of its sophisticated charm. "You said you transferred the four hundred thousand! You said we would be set for life!"

"I did transfer it!" Julian shouted back, slamming his hand onto the table. "But Clara canceled the main account before the transfer cleared the intermediary bank in Belize. The bank has flagged the transaction as suspicious. They're demanding a secure, two-factor authorization code that can only be sent to Clara's personal device."

Melissa fell back onto the plush velvet sofa, her hands shaking. She looked at the designer shopping bags piled in the corner of the room—Gucci, Prada, Rolex. All of them had been purchased the day before, just before the cards were killed.

"She knew," Melissa whispered, her eyes wide with terror. "That bitch knew what we were doing. That's why she replied with 'Good luck.' She was mocking us."

"We need to get out of this hotel," Julian said, his eyes darting toward the door as if expecting the police to burst in at any moment. "If we can't pay the bill, they will lock us up in a Mexican jail. You have no idea what those places are like, Melissa. We wouldn't last a week."

May you like

"Where are we supposed to go?" she cried. "We have no money! We have nothing!"

Julian picked up his phone, his fingers trembling as he dialed a number he had hoped he would never have to call again. "I have to call her. I have to make her think this was a mistake. If I can get her to unlock just one account... we can get out of here."
