Chapter 9 - The Cartier Receipt Found in the Guest Suite Wastebasket

Before the speeches began, I excused myself to the ladies' powder room, deliberately taking the path that led past the private hospitality suites reserved for the gala's high-tier sponsors.

As I rounded the corridor near Suite 402, I heard hushed, frantic voices coming from the cracked mahogany doorway.

I stepped into the alcove, pulling out my phone, and pressed record.

“...he doesn't suspect a thing, Greg,” Vanessa’s voice purred through the door, laced with a venomous excitement.

Greg. Her "abusive" ex-husband.

“Daniel transferred the final $150,000 into the Apex account this morning,” Vanessa continued, laughing softly. “The fool thinks we’re launching a design firm in Miami together. He booked two first-class tickets for December 26th. The second that plane lands and the wire clears into our offshore account in the Caymans, I’m dumping him at the terminal.”

A man’s voice chuckled through the speakerphone. “Good girl. What about his wife? Is she causing problems?”

“Emily?” Vanessa sneered with dripping contempt. “She’s a pathetic, naive doormat. She sat at breakfast smiling while I drank her tea. She has no idea Daniel drained their retirement funds. By the time they figure out what happened, we’ll be sipping rum in Grand Cayman with half a million of Bennett money.”

“Make sure you get the signature on the corporate guarantee tonight,” Greg reminded her. “Once he signs the municipal vendor bond for Sterling Heights, he’s personally liable for the underwriting debt.”

“Consider it done, baby,” Vanessa whispered. “I have the document in my clutch right now. He’ll sign anything I put in front of him before he goes on stage.”

I stopped the recording, saved the audio file directly into the Christmas Photos cloud folder, and sent a duplicate copy straight to Eleanor Vance and Judge Robert Bennett.

The circle was complete.

Vanessa wasn't just conning Daniel—she was orchestrating a coordinated criminal syndicate fraud with her supposed "ex-husband," using Daniel as the disposable fall guy to take the legal and financial blame for a massive municipal bond default.

Daniel had betrayed his loyal wife and family for a woman who viewed him as nothing more than a brainless, arrogant ATM with a famous last name.

I smoothed down the crimson silk of my dress, checked my lipstick in the gilded hallway mirror, and walked back into the ballroom with the absolute, terrifying peace of a woman who held every single trigger in the room.
