Chapter 11 - The Live Stream at the Grand Ballard Hotel

Before Daniel could scream or cause a violent scene, I was already walking gracefully toward the stage, my heels clicking with absolute authority.

As I reached the podium, shaking hands with Mayor Sterling and accepting the golden ceremonial plaque, the giant twelve-foot projector screens flanking the stage flickered to life.

Traditionally, the screens were meant to display the architectural renderings of the new Sterling Heights civic center.

Instead, Eleanor Vance’s technical team initiated the override.

The first slide that appeared on the massive screens across the ballroom was a high-resolution, crystal-clear photograph of Daniel Bennett holding Vanessa Reed’s hand beneath the Christmas tree at the mall, complete with the timestamp: December 19th, 2:15 PM.

A collective, stunned gasp rippled through the eight hundred attendees in the ballroom.

The next slide transitioned automatically:

A high-resolution bank statement showing the $482,000 in fraudulent wire transfers from the Bennett accounts into Apex Horizon Holdings.

Then, the sound system of the Palmer House Grand Ballroom echoed with the crystal-clear audio recording I had captured twenty minutes earlier in Suite 402:

“...Daniel transferred the final $150,000 into the Apex account this morning... The fool thinks we’re launching a design firm in Miami together... By the time they figure out what happened, we’ll be sipping rum in Grand Cayman with half a million of Bennett money...”

The silence in the grand ballroom was absolute, suffocating, and total.

Every city official, every corporate titan, every media reporter, and every high-society patron turned their heads in unison toward Table 1.

Daniel stood there, alone in the center of the room, his face completely gray, looking like a man who had just stepped onto the scaffold.

Near the media riser, Vanessa Reed turned white as a sheet. She dropped her designer clutch, the papers spilling across the carpet, and frantically turned to flee toward the exit doors.

“Security,” Mayor Sterling’s voice boomed over the microphone, his tone laced with cold fury at the attempted fraud on his administration. “Detain that woman at the door. Chicago Police are already waiting in the lobby.”
