Chapter 4 - Vanessa’s Unannounced Visit and the Audacity of the Other Woman

By two o’clock that afternoon, a sleek white Lexus pulled into the Bennett driveway.

I watched from the second-story library window as Vanessa Reed stepped out into the crisp winter air. She looked like she had stepped off the set of a daytime drama: perfectly blown-out hair, an oversized camel-hair coat draped over designer leather leggings, carrying a Saint Laurent handbag that cost at least three months of an average mortgage payment. For a woman whose ex-husband had supposedly "wiped her out," she looked remarkably well-funded.

Daniel practically sprinted to the front door to greet her, escorting her into the foyer with an attentive, nervous energy.

“Margaret, Emily,” Daniel called out, his voice echoing up the spiraling staircase. “Vanessa is here!”

I stood beside Margaret at the top of the landing. Margaret gave my hand a brief, firm squeeze.

“Remember, Emily,” Margaret whispered, her face stone-cold. “Arrogance is a predator's fatal flaw. Let her show her teeth.”

We descended the stairs together, side by side, our heels clicking on the hardwood in perfect synchronization.

Vanessa stood in the foyer, her eyes greedily scanning the Bennett estate—the grand crystal chandelier, the antique oil paintings lining the paneled walls, the sheer generational wealth radiating from every corner. When her eyes landed on me, a faint, condescending smirk flickered across her red lips before dissolving into a fragile, wide-eyed expression of vulnerability.

“Margaret, Mrs. Bennett... thank you so much for having me,” Vanessa breathed, clutching her designer bag against her chest. “I feel so utterly humiliated that Daniel had to burden you with my personal struggles. But Daniel has just been an absolute rock for me during this divorce.”

“Please, come into the sitting room,” Margaret replied with polite detachment, leading the way to the formal parlor where a silver tea service had been arranged.

We all took our seats. Daniel sat on the love seat beside Vanessa, sitting just close enough that their shoulders nearly brushed. I took the armchair directly across from them, crossing my legs with calm elegance.

“Daniel mentioned your ex-husband left you in quite a bind,” I said, initiating the conversation with polite curiosity. “It must be devastating, especially with a young child.”

Vanessa sighed dramatically, dabbing the corner of her perfectly dry eye with a tissue. “It’s been an absolute nightmare, Emily. Greg froze all our liquid assets. I’ve had to rely on the generosity of true friends just to keep a roof over my son’s head. Daniel was kind enough to offer me a consulting position at his firm to help me stay afloat.”

I tilted my head, smiling faintly. “A consulting position? How fascinating. What specific media consulting are you providing for an architectural firm, Vanessa?”

Daniel shifted uncomfortably in his seat, clearing his throat. “Emily, Vanessa has extensive experience in brand management—”

“I was asking Vanessa, darling,” I cut in, my voice silky and calm.

Vanessa’s smile tightened slightly. “I’m helping Daniel rebrand the firm’s public relations for the Sterling Heights commercial pitch. It requires a lot of... private, after-hours strategy sessions.”

The double entendre hung in the room like cheap perfume. She was testing me, pushing the boundaries to see if I would crumble or throw a tantrum in front of Daniel’s parents.

Margaret poured the Earl Grey tea with steady hands, handing a cup to Vanessa. “A woman must always protect her own interests, Vanessa. Tell me, the media retainer Daniel has been transferring to you monthly... is that sufficient to cover your living expenses at The Gwen?”

The room went dead silent.

Vanessa froze, the porcelain teacup hovering inches from her lips. Daniel’s face drained of color, his eyes darting frantically between his mother and me.

“I... I beg your pardon?” Vanessa stammered, her fragile facade cracking for a split second.

“The boutique hotel on Michigan Avenue,” Margaret said pleasantly, taking a delicate sip of her tea. “Daniel’s corporate account showed several extended weekend bookings under your project code. We just wanted to ensure the accommodations were up to your professional standards.”

Daniel jumped in frantically, his voice rising an octave. “Mom, that was for out-of-town investors! Vanessa was just managing the hospitality suite!”

May you like

“Of course she was,” I said smoothly, leaning forward and meeting Vanessa’s panicked eyes with an icy glare. “We’re so grateful to have someone so dedicated to my husband’s private affairs. In fact, Vanessa, you must join us at the Christmas Eve Charity Gala next week. Daniel will need all his key... assets on full display.”

Vanessa swallowed hard, realizing in that chilling moment that she hadn't walked into a sanctuary of gullible benefactors—she had walked straight into an interrogation room.
