Chapter 10 - Margaret’s Ultimate Betrayal (to Daniel) and the Rewritten Bennett Trust

At eight-fifteen, Mayor-elect Thomas Sterling took the podium under the blinding glare of television spotlights and media cameras.
“Ladies and gentlemen, esteemed colleagues, and honored guests,” Mayor Sterling’s booming voice echoed through the Palmer House ballroom. “Tonight, we celebrate the historic revitalization of our beloved city. The Sterling Heights project represents the largest public-private urban development in Chicago’s modern history.”
Daniel sat at the center of our VIP table, his chest puffed out like a peacock, his hands shaking with nervous adrenaline. Under the table, I could see his phone buzzing constantly with messages from Vanessa, who was standing near the media riser with a manila envelope clutched in her hands.
“This project requires visionary leadership,” the Mayor continued. “It requires unwavering integrity, decades of corporate stability, and a leadership team that embodies the very best values of Chicago.”
Daniel began to unbutton his tuxedo jacket, preparing to stand up and walk toward the stage the moment his company’s name was called.
“To lead this monumental $45-million undertaking,” Mayor Sterling announced, “the City of Chicago is proud to award the master development contract to... Bennett Architecture & Urban Design!”
The ballroom erupted into thunderous applause.
Daniel leaped to his feet, a triumphant, arrogant roar escaping his lips as he raised his arms to soak in the adulation of the room. He turned to look at the stage, waiting for the spotlight to hit him.
“And now,” the Mayor announced into the microphone, “please welcome to the stage to accept the contract on behalf of the controlling majority of the Bennett Trust... the new Chief Executive Officer and Principal Owner of Bennett Architecture... Mrs. Emily Bennett!”
Daniel froze.
The smile on his face calcified into an expression of sheer, uncomprehending horror.
The primary spotlight swung across the dark ballroom, completely bypassing Daniel, and locked directly onto me.
I stood up slowly, the liquid crimson silk gown shimmering under the spotlight, my diamonds blazing with dazzling light. Beside me, Judge Robert Bennett and Margaret Bennett stood up in unison, clapping proudly as Margaret gently took my hand and raised it into the air.
“What... what is this?” Daniel choked, his voice cracking violently over the applause. “Mom?! What did he just say?! Emily is just an analyst! I am the founder!”

Margaret leaned over, her cold hazel eyes boring into her son’s panicked soul with zero mercy.
“You were the minority manager, Daniel,” Margaret whispered with razor-sharp precision. “As of four o’clock this afternoon, Robert and I executed our controlling voting rights. You have been terminated for gross financial misconduct and fraudulent misappropriation of trust assets. Emily owns the company now.”
