Chapter 12 - The Fall of the Golden Boy and the Scramble of Rats on a Sinking Ship

The grand ballroom dissolved into calculated chaos.

Two uniformed Chicago Police officers and private hotel security intercepted Vanessa Reed at the double mahogany doors before she could even reach the elevators. When she realized there was no escape, the polished, sophisticated facade vanished entirely. She began screaming profanities, clawing at the security guards, and pointing a trembling, manicured finger back at Daniel.

“He gave me the money!” Vanessa shrieked, her voice echoing across the marble foyer as cameras flashed relentlessly. “He begged me to take it! He forged the corporate transfers! Arrest him! He’s the one who robbed his own wife!”

Daniel stumbled backward against Table 1, knocking over a crystal champagne flute that shattered violently on the floor.

“Vanessa, shut up!” Daniel screamed, his voice cracking with hysteria as sweat poured down his forehead, ruining his slicked-back hair. “I did this for us! You told me you loved me! You told me we were building a future!”

“You idiot!” Vanessa spat, her eyes wild with venom as handcuffs clicked around her wrists. “You were just a pathetic, insecure mommy’s boy with a checkbook! I have a real man waiting for me, and you’re going to rot in prison!”

The high-society crowd parted like the Red Sea, watching in disgusted fascination as the Chicago PD escorted Vanessa Reed out in chains.

Daniel turned frantically toward his parents, his eyes wide with desperate, pleading terror.

“Mom! Dad! You have to stop this!” Daniel sobbed, rushing toward Margaret and dropping to his knees on the ballroom floor, clawing at the hem of her emerald velvet gown. “It was a setup! Vanessa brainwashed me! She took advantage of my stress! Mom, tell the Mayor this is a mistake! You’re my mother!”

Margaret Bennett looked down at the grown man kneeling in pathetic disgrace at her feet. There were no tears in her eyes. There was no hesitation.

She slowly pulled the velvet fabric of her dress out of his trembling grasp.

“A mother raises a son to be a man of honor, Daniel,” Margaret said, her voice carrying clearly to every listening ear in the room. “When that son chooses to become a thief, a liar, and a coward who humiliates his family and robs his wife... he ceases to be my son. He becomes merely a liability.”

Judge Robert Bennett stepped forward, looking down at his son with the cold, unyielding gaze of a man delivering a life sentence.

“Your car keys are in my pocket,” Robert said quietly. “Your corporate credit cards have been canceled. Your name has been removed from the family home. By tomorrow morning, your personal accounts will be frozen pending Eleanor Vance’s forensic injunction.”

Robert looked down at the shattered champagne glass on the floor.

“Do not come home tonight, Daniel. There is nothing left for you there.”
