Chapter 8 - Playing the Fool in a Red Dress and Smiling Through the Poison

At precisely seven o’clock that evening, the Bennett family limousine pulled up under the glittering marquee of the Palmer House Hilton.
When Daniel emerged from the car in his custom tuxedo, he looked every bit the rising star of Chicago architecture. But when he turned to help me out of the vehicle, his jaw dropped in utter, unvarnished shock.
I stepped onto the red carpet in the liquid crimson silk gown, my hair styled in an intricate Hollywood wave, the Bennett family heirloom diamonds catching the flashbulbs of the society photographers. I looked radiant, commanding, and completely unlike the quiet, submissive wife he thought he had manipulated into obscurity.
“Emily?” Daniel choked, his eyes darting frantically over my dress. “What... what happened to the gray dress I bought you?”
“Oh, darling,” Margaret intervened smoothly, stepping out behind me in an imposing emerald velvet gown, her arm linked with Judge Robert Bennett. “A Bennett woman never wears gray to the Palmer House. Emily represents the future of this family. She deserves to shine.”
Daniel swallowed hard, his collar suddenly looking a little too tight around his neck. “Right. Of course. You look... stunning, Em.”
We entered the Grand Ballroom, a cavernous wonderland of gilded ceilings, towering crystal chandeliers, and hundreds of Chicago’s elite sipping vintage champagne.
Within minutes, Vanessa Reed appeared through the crowd.
She was wearing a skin-tight gold sequin gown that practically screamed for attention, clutching a champagne flute with manicured fingers. But when she saw me standing beside Daniel—draped in crimson silk and wearing the multi-carat Bennett diamonds—the smug, predatory smirk vanished from her face, replaced by a flash of raw, envious fury.
“Daniel! Margaret! Emily!” Vanessa purred, gliding over with forced grace. “What a breathtaking turnout!”
“Vanessa,” I greeted her warmly, stepping forward to press my cheek against hers in a fake high-society embrace. “You look dazzling in gold. It matches your ambition so wonderfully.”
Vanessa pulled back, her eyes narrowing as she tried to decipher the razor-sharp edge behind my polite smile.
Daniel leaned in, whispering nervously into my ear. “Emily, sweetheart, why don't you and Mom go grab a table near the back? The developers want to speak with me near the podium before the Mayor arrives.”
“Don't be silly, Daniel,” Margaret commanded, placing a firm, regal hand on his forearm. “We are sitting at the primary sponsor table right in front of the main stage. Where the entire city can see us.”

As Daniel was dragged toward the front of the ballroom, I caught Vanessa slipping off toward the VIP lounge.
The stage was set. The players were in position. And Daniel had no idea that the spotlight he had craved his entire life was about to become a firing squad.
