Chapter 9 - The Boardroom Purge

At eight-thirty the next morning, the executive boardroom on the fiftieth floor of the Vance Global Tower in Midtown Manhattan was packed to capacity.

Every major shareholder, department head, and institutional investor was present. The atmosphere was thick with tension, fear, and uncertainty. The morning papers sat on the long mahogany conference table, their front pages dominated by the same screaming headline:

VANCE DYNASTY COLLAPSES: CEO AND BROTHER ARRESTED AT PLAZA GALA FOR FELONY ASSAULT AND $16M FRAUD.

When the frosted glass doors opened and I was wheeled into the room by Phoebe, the entire board stood up in unison.

Arthur Sterling, Phoebe’s father and the legendary founder of Sterling Capital—who owned twelve percent of our institutional shares—stepped forward, his silver hair neatly combed, his eyes shining with profound respect.

"Mabel," Arthur said, taking my hand gently. "On behalf of the entire board of directors and every honest shareholder in this company, we owe you an apology that words can barely cover. We let that charming sociopath blind us."

"You didn't know, Arthur," I said, rolling to the head of the conference table—the seat Flynn had occupied for three years. "Flynn was an expert at manufacturing illusions. But the illusion is dead. Now we rebuild reality."

I pressed a button on the table console, activating the master screen.

"Here is the current state of Vance Global Logistics," I began, my voice commanding absolute attention. "Flynn and Eleanor's combined forty percent voting shares have been seized and placed under the management of an independent federal monitor pending final forfeiture. With my forty percent, plus Arthur’s twelve percent and the employee share trust's eight percent, we have a clear, unshakeable sixty percent supermajority."

The board members nodded vigorously, several taking notes on their tablets.

"Our first order of business," I announced, "is the immediate termination of Candice Reed, Gregory Vance, and every middle manager involved in the falsification of our Mediterranean routing logs. Our second order of business is a full corporate rebranding."

I advanced the slide. A new logo appeared on the screen: AURA LOGISTICS.

"The name Vance is dead in global commerce," I stated firmly. "Aura Logistics will absorb all existing client contracts, honor all liabilities, and pay out full restitution to every defrauded partner within forty-eight hours, funded directly by the sixteen million dollars recovered from Flynn's offshore accounts."

Arthur Sterling raised his hand with a broad smile. "I move to approve the restructuring plan, the rebranding to Aura Logistics, and the immediate appointment of Mabel Sterling-Vance as sole Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board with full executive powers."

"Seconded," called out three institutional investors simultaneously.

"All in favor?" Arthur asked.

Every single hand around the table went up into the air without a second's hesitation.

"Motion carried unanimously," the corporate secretary recorded.

I looked around the room at the men and women who had watched Flynn take credit for my work for nearly a decade. For the first time, there was no man standing in front of me to cast a shadow.

"Thank you, gentlemen and ladies," I said. "Now, let's get back to work."
