Chapter 6 - The Fall of the Prodigal Son

The sound of my motorized wheelchair hummed softly against the silent ballroom carpet. Four hundred pairs of eyes parted for me like the Red Sea.
I stopped at the foot of the stage, looking up at Flynn Vance.
"Good evening, Flynn," I said, my voice projecting clearly through a wireless lapel mic that Mateo had synced directly to the Plaza's PA system. "You told me this morning that I wouldn't have a single friend left in this city by midnight. It seems you miscalculated the attendance list."
Flynn stepped to the edge of the stage, his eyes wide with a mixture of terror and unhinged fury. "Mabel! You crazy, manipulative... You’re committing corporate sabotage! I am the Chief Executive Officer of this company! You have no standing here!"
"You were the Chief Executive Officer for approximately three hours," Phoebe Sterling announced, stepping forward and opening her briefcase on the nearest banquet table. "At four-forty-five PM today, following an emergency ex-parte filing with the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York, Judge Sarah Vance issued an emergency injunction freezing all voting authority of Resolution 409."
Phoebe pulled out a sheaf of certified court documents, turning to face the stunned crowd of investors and journalists.
"Furthermore," Phoebe continued, her voice ringing out like a judge's gavel, "forensic analysis of Vance Global Logistics' operating accounts has confirmed that between March of last year and last Friday, the sum of three million, eight hundred and forty-two thousand dollars was siphoned from client escrow accounts into Seaborne Assets LLC and Vance Maritime Holdings—two shell corporations registered in the Cook Islands under the sole beneficial ownership of Flynn Vance, Eleanor Vance, and Gregory Vance."
A collective murmur of disgust swept through the room.
"That's a lie!" Eleanor shrieked, jumping up from her table, knocking her chair backward. "I am Eleanor Vance! My family founded the Alpine Historical Society! How dare you accuse us of theft!"
"Special Agent Marcus," I said calmly, looking over my shoulder at the lead federal officer. "Would you like to explain the emeralds around Mrs. Vance's neck?"
Special Agent Marcus stepped forward, badge displayed prominently on his chest. "Eleanor Vance, the invoice for that three-million-dollar Colombian emerald necklace was paid on September twelfth via wire transfer directly from an account titled Vance Global Logistics Escrow #4. That money was earmarked for the port customs fees of our international clients. Under Title 18, United States Code, Section 1956, that constitutes federal money laundering."
Eleanor's hands flew to her throat. She looked down at the glittering green stones as if they had suddenly turned into burning coals.
"Greg!" Flynn screamed, looking desperately around the room for his brother. "Greg, call our attorneys! Greg!"
At the back of the room, Greg Vance had almost reached the service exit. But before his hand could touch the brass panic bar, two undercover federal agents in plainclothes stepped in front of him, drawing their service pistols to low-ready.
"Gregory Vance," one agent announced loudly. "Stand down and put your hands behind your head. You are under arrest for felony assault with a deadly weapon, conspiracy to commit extortion, and witness intimidation."
Greg let out a roar of rage, swinging a massive right hook at the nearest agent.
The agent ducked smoothly beneath the wild punch, delivered a driving knee into Greg’s midsection, and executed a textbook hip-throw. Greg slammed into the carpeted floor with a bone-jarring crash. Within four seconds, his arms were pinned behind his back, and steel handcuffs clicked tightly around his wrists.
"Get off me!" Greg howled, his face mashed into the carpet in front of dozens of high-society guests who were filming everything on their smartphones. "Flynn! Mother! Help me!"
Flynn collapsed back against the wooden podium on stage, clutching his chest, hyperventilating.
I tapped the control joystick of my wheelchair, rolling up the handicap access ramp to the side of the stage until I was sitting level with Flynn.
"You thought you could break my bones, steal my life's work, and hide behind the Vance name," I said softly, my voice carrying to every corner of the frozen room. "You forgot one thing, Flynn. The Vance name was bankrupt seven years ago. I didn't marry into your legacy. I funded it. And tonight, I’m foreclosing."
Special Agent Marcus walked up the stage stairs, pulled a pair of cuffs from his belt, and placed his hand on Flynn's shoulder.

"Flynn Vance, you have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law..."
As the steel cuffs clicked around Flynn’s wrists, the entire ballroom erupted into an absolute frenzy of flashing cameras and shouting journalists.
