Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Gala

The Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel glittered like a jewel box under three massive crystal chandeliers. Over four hundred of New York’s elite—hedge fund managers, shipping tycoons, foreign trade attachés, and socialites—milled about in black-tie attire, sipping Dom Pérignon from crystal flutes.
At the center of the room stood the Vance family, holding court like European royalty.
Eleanor Vance was resplendent in an emerald satin gown, her neck adorned with the infamous three-million-dollar Colombian emerald necklace that had been purchased through a shell company called Seaborne Assets LLC—an entity Flynn had created to siphon operational cash from our firm. She was laughing theatrically, showing off her manicured hands to a circle of Upper East Side matrons.
"Oh, poor Mabel," Eleanor sighed, dabbing at an imaginary tear with a lace handkerchief. "A tragic fall down our stairs. Flynn is simply devastated. She has always been so fragile, you know... balance issues, severe anxiety. Flynn has had to carry the entire enterprise on his shoulders while nursing her at home."
"Such a devoted husband," one socialite murmured. "A true gentleman."
A few yards away, Flynn Vance stood with Candice Reed, our VP of Human Resources. Candice looked stunning in a backless scarlet silk dress, her fingers brushing Flynn’s arm with familiar, illicit intimacy.
"Did the board resolution go through?" Candice whispered under the cover of the brass quartet playing Gershwin.
"Signed, sealed, and delivered at four-thirty," Flynn smirked, swirling the Scotch in his glass. "With Mabel incapacitated and absent from the emergency vote, Mother and I passed Resolution 409. I am now the sole Managing Director with full unilateral signing authority on all corporate treasury accounts. The three point eight million gap? I’ll authorize a bridge loan from our Swiss credit line tomorrow morning to balance the ledger before the auditors even print the quarterly report."
"And Mabel?" Candice asked, her lips curling into a cruel smile. "What happens when she gets out of that hospital?"
"She won't get out until we want her to," Flynn said coldly. "Judge Holbrook’s restraining order will be vacated on Monday once our medical experts testify about her unstable psychological state. By next week, she’ll be in a private sanitarium in Vermont, completely cut off from the outside world. This company belongs to us now, Candice. To you and me."
He leaned down and kissed her cheek, right there in the middle of the ballroom, completely unconcerned with who might see.
Suddenly, the chimes echoed through the high-ceilinged room.
The master of ceremonies stepped up to the main podium at the front of the stage, where two massive eighty-five-inch LED screens displayed the golden emblem of Vance Global Logistics: Connecting the World with Integrity.
"Ladies and gentlemen, distinguished guests," the MC’s voice boomed through the Bose sound system. "Please take your seats. Tonight, as we celebrate seven years of industry-leading innovation and philanthropy, we invite the newly appointed Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board, Mr. Flynn Vance, to address our partners and announce our historic European expansion!"
Thunderous applause broke out across the ballroom.
Greg Vance, dressed in a tux that could barely contain his massive shoulders, clapped wildly near the VIP table. Eleanor beamed, raising her champagne glass toward her eldest son.
Flynn adjusted his bowtie, buttoned his Brioni jacket, and walked up the carpeted stairs of the stage with the swagger of a man who believed the world was his birthright. He stood behind the podium, smiled with dazzling, rehearsed charm, and raised his hands to quiet the audience.
"Thank you," Flynn began, his voice deep, resonant, brimming with confidence. "Seven years ago, when I founded Vance Global Logistics, I had a vision. A vision of seamless global commerce built on trust, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to family values..."
Behind him, the massive LED screens suddenly flickered. A sharp burst of digital static crackled through the multimillion-dollar sound system, cutting off his microphone with an ear-splitting pop.
Flynn paused, tapping the mic with a slight, annoyed frown. "Is the audio working?"
The ambient ballroom lights began to fade, plunging the room into dramatic, unexpected darkness. The only illumination came from the two giant screens behind Flynn, which switched from the gold corporate logo to a stark, black background.
