Chapter 5 - The Video That Shook Manhattan

Murmurs of confusion rippled through the four hundred guests. Flynn spun around, staring at the screens with wide, panicked eyes.
"Turn that off!" he hissed toward the sound booth at the back of the room. "Someone kill the feed!"
The technicians at the sound booth slammed their hands onto the control consoles, but the keyboards were completely locked out. On the master monitor, a green terminal window displayed a continuous scrolling code: ROOT ACCESS OVERRIDDEN BY USER: MABEL_STERLING_ADMIN.
A second later, the massive speakers boomed to life, not with music, but with the crisp, unmistakable sound of a heavy front door slamming shut.
On the twin eighty-five-inch displays, crystal-clear 4K footage filled the screen.
The camera angle looked down from the high ceiling of the Vance estate’s marble foyer. The date and timestamp in the bottom-right corner read: FRIDAY, 11:42 PM.
The entire ballroom fell into a stunned, breathless silence.
On the screen, four hundred guests watched as Flynn, Eleanor, and Greg surrounded a petite woman in business attire. The audio was so loud and sharp that every syllable resonated off the Plaza’s gilded moldings.
"Hold the little bitch down, Greg!" Eleanor’s shrill, vicious voice echoed through the ballroom. The screen showed Eleanor lunging forward, digging her diamond-ringed fingers into Mabel’s shoulders, pinning her against the bottom step of the staircase. "Make sure she can't run to the police before the share transfer is filed!"
Gasps of absolute horror erupted from the VIP tables. Several socialites dropped their champagne glasses, the crystal shattering on the parquet floor.
"Let go of me!" Mabel’s voice screamed from the speakers. "Flynn! Tell them to stop!"
On screen, Flynn stood at the top of the landing, holding Mabel’s rose-gold smartphone. His face was twisted in cold, detached amusement. "Don't leave marks on her face, Greg," Flynn’s recorded voice instructed casually. "Just break the bone so she can't leave the house. We need her in a hospital bed until the offshore accounts clear."
Then came the sickening, wet crunch of bone as Greg’s heavy boot slammed down onto Mabel’s leg.
Mabel’s agonized scream tore through the Plaza Hotel’s Grand Ballroom like a physical blow.
Women in the audience covered their mouths, crying out in shock. Seasoned Wall Street executives leaped to their feet, staring at the stage in disgust.
On screen, Greg stepped back, panting, while Eleanor spat directly into Mabel’s face. Flynn walked down the stairs, deliberately stomped Mabel’s phone into fragments beneath his leather shoe, and looked down at his sobbing, crippled wife.
"Three point eight million dollars moved through Vance Maritime Holdings," Flynn said on the recording. "The auditors will never know. You're going to sign the company over to me, Mabel, or the next fall will be from the third-floor balcony."
The video cut out.
The lights in the ballroom snapped back on to full brightness.
Flynn Vance stood at the center of the stage, his face entirely drained of color, his skin an ashen, sickly gray. He was shaking violently.
"That... that is a deepfake!" Flynn shrieked into the dead microphone, his voice cracking into a high-pitched wail. "That is an AI-generated smear campaign! Security! Clear this room! Clear the room immediately!"
Nobody moved. The four hundred elite guests stared at him as if he were a rabid animal.
Eleanor sat frozen at her VIP table, her hand trembling so violently that red wine spilled down the front of her emerald satin gown like fresh blood. Greg was backing toward the rear exit, his eyes darting frantically toward the doors.
Then, the heavy double doors at the main entrance of the ballroom swung wide open.
A hush fell over the crowd as a woman in a motorized titanium wheelchair rolled smoothly down the center aisle.
It was me.
I wore an exquisite, midnight-blue velvet evening gown tailored specifically to drape gracefully over the full cast on my left leg. My hair was styled in an elegant chignon; diamond earrings caught the chandelier light; my posture was straight as an arrow, radiating cold, untouchable majesty.

Behind me walked Phoebe Sterling, carrying two thick leather briefcases, flanked by six armed federal agents wearing windbreakers that bore four letters across the back:
F - B - I.
