Chapter 8 - The Alpine Raid

By two o'clock in the morning, the tranquil, multimillion-dollar enclave of Alpine, New Jersey was lit up by the strobing red and blue lights of twelve federal vehicles.
Search lights illuminated the limestone facade of the Vance estate. Neighbors in silk robes stood at the edges of their manicured lawns, whispering behind their gates as federal agents carried out cardboard evidence boxes labeled VANCE ENTERPRISES - FINANCIAL.
I sat in the passenger seat of Phoebe’s Mercedes-Maybach, parked at the end of the driveway, watching the destruction of the house where I had suffered in silence for seven years.
Mateo, our chief cybersecurity specialist, walked over to the car, leaning down to the open window with a glowing tablet in hand.
"They found the humidor, Mabel," Mateo said, a grin breaking across his tired face. "The hardware wallets were exactly where Candice said they were. We’ve already bypassed the secondary PIN using Flynn’s cloud recovery phrase. Twelve point four million dollars in Tether and Ethereum. All linked directly to systematic port kickbacks over the last four years."
"Transfer the custody keys to the court-appointed receiver's escrow account," Phoebe instructed. "That money goes straight toward repaying our defrauded clients and replenishing the Vance Global employee pension fund that Flynn raided last quarter."
"Done and done," Mateo tapped the screen, executing the transaction. "What about the physical assets?"
"Everything goes to auction," I said, staring at the grand double doors of the house where I had been thrown down the stairs. "The sports cars in the six-car garage, the modern art collection Greg bought with stolen funds, the wine cellar, the vintage watches. Every single dollar Flynn ever touched will be liquidated."
Phoebe turned to look at me, her expression softening. "How is your leg feeling?"
"It aches," I admitted, looking down at the heavy plaster. "The doctor said it will take six months of physical therapy before I can walk without a cane. But compared to the last three days? I’ve never felt lighter in my life."
My burner phone buzzed in my lap. It was a call from the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn.
I accepted the call and put it on speaker.
"You have a collect call from an inmate at the Metropolitan Detention Center: Flynn Vance. Press one to accept."
I pressed one.
"Mabel?!" Flynn’s voice exploded through the speakers, frantic, breathless, echoing against the concrete walls of a holding cell. "Mabel, listen to me! You have to call off your lawyer! The magistrate denied bail! They’re putting me in a shared cell with armed felons! Greg is in the medical ward with a concussion! Mother has been hospitalized for severe hypertension!"
"Good," I said calmly.
"Mabel, please!" Flynn began to weep, the arrogant, charming prince reduced to a sniveling coward. "We can fix this! I love you! You know I’ve always loved you! It was my mother... Eleanor pushed me into it! Greg was the one who got violent! I tried to protect you! I swear on my life I tried to protect you!"
"You stood on the stairs and told your brother not to hit my face so it wouldn't show on camera, Flynn," I reminded him, my voice flat, pitiless. "I have the 4K footage. I’ve watched it six times tonight."
There was a long, suffocating silence on the other end of the line.
"What do you want from me?" he sobbed. "You’ve already taken everything! The company, the house, the money... what more do you want?"
"I don't want anything from you, Flynn," I replied. "I already took what was mine. Tomorrow morning, my legal team is filing for an expedited, fault-based divorce on grounds of extreme cruelty, attempted murder, and financial fraud. You will walk into federal prison with zero equity, zero assets, and a restitution judgment that will garnish every penny you ever earn for the rest of your natural life."
"Mabel—no! Please—!"

I hung up the phone.
I turned to Phoebe. "Let's go back to the city. We have an eight AM emergency shareholder meeting, and I don't like to be late."
