Chapter 9 - Midnight Convoy on the Hudson Highway

With two police helicopters carving a path through the storm above and four state trooper interceptors running interference in front of us, our armored SUV roared into the ambulance bay of St. Jude Women’s Pavilion in White Plains.

Dozens of medical staff in sterile scrubs, accompanied by heavily armed federal marshals, rushed the vehicle the second my wheels screeched to a halt.

The rear doors were thrown open.

"We have a female, thirty-four years old, severe obstetric distress, high-dosage oxytocin toxicity, thirty-six weeks gestation!" I shouted to the triage doctor as Alexander and the medics carefully transferred Clara onto the heavy gurney.

"BP is falling, 80 over 50!" a nurse yelled, attaching a portable monitor. "Fetal heart rate is decelerating! We need her in Operating Room 1 immediately for an emergent c-section!"

"I'm coming with her!" Alexander yelled, refusing to let go of Clara’s hand as the gurney went flying down the double-wide sterile corridor.

"Sir, you need to scrub in!" a surgical nurse insisted.

"I don't give a damn about scrubbing in, that is my wife and child!" Alexander roared, pushing through the swinging doors into the surgical prep suite.

I stood in the bright, quiet reception hallway, leaning against the cold wall. My blazer was soaked with rain, my hands bruised, and my adrenaline finally began to ebb away, leaving a deep, bone-weary exhaustion in its wake.

The main entrance doors slid open, and Marcus Cole hurried in, accompanied by Agent Sarah Hayes. Marcus was carrying his briefcase, but for the first time in twenty years, his immaculate tie was crooked and his hair was disheveled.

"Elena!" Marcus rushed over, looking at the blood and rain on my clothes. "Are you hurt?!"

"It's not mine," I breathed, taking a bottle of water handed to me by an agent. "Clara is in the OR. They took her in just in time. How is Lily?"

Marcus’s face softened into a warm, genuine smile. "Lily is eating ice cream in the FBI Director’s private conference lounge. She told the Director that his surveillance cameras in the north wing were misaligned by three degrees. He’s already offering her an internship when she turns eighteen."

I let out a soft, ragged laugh, wiping the cold rain from my face. "That sounds like her."

Agent Hayes stepped forward, her tablet glowing with active case files. "We just finished the preliminary sweep of Cynthia Vance’s private office in Tribeca. Elena, what you pulled from Blackwood Ridge’s servers gave us the encryption keys to their entire criminal network."

"What did you find?" I asked.

"It's worse than we imagined," Hayes said quietly. "Cynthia Vance and Vanessa didn't just want the Whitmore shares. They were heavily leveraged with a European syndicate that was about to foreclose on their personal assets. The trust was their only way out. Cynthia had already pre-signed adoption papers to take full custody of the child the moment Vanessa 'delivered' and Clara was declared officially deceased."

"And Vanessa?"

"Vanessa cracked forty minutes ago," Hayes replied. "When we played the ballroom video of your daughter exposing her pillow, followed by the GPS telemetry proving Cynthia abandoned her at the hotel to flee north alone, Vanessa realized Cynthia was using her as a shield. She just signed a full sworn confession."

Suddenly, the red light above Operating Room 1 flashed green.

The heavy doors swung open, and the lead surgeon stepped out into the hallway, pulling down his blue surgical mask.

Alexander followed right behind him. He was still wearing his blood-stained undershirt and sterile paper booties, his face completely pale, his eyes wide with an emotion so powerful it seemed to paralyze him.

In his large, scarred arms, wrapped snugly in a soft blue flannel blanket, was a tiny, crying newborn baby.
