Chapter 10 - The Wiretap and the Broken Socialite

"Alexander..." Marcus whispered, stepping forward with tears welling in his aged eyes. "Is she...?"

Alexander looked up, a radiant, tearful smile breaking across his exhausted face. "She's alive. Clara made it through the surgery. Her vitals are stabilizing in the recovery unit."

He walked over to where I was standing and carefully angled the blanket so I could see inside.

The infant had a thick tuft of dark hair, just like Alexander’s, and tiny, perfect hands that gripped the edge of the blanket with astonishing strength. His little chest rose and fell with strong, healthy breaths.

"Meet Leo," Alexander whispered, his voice cracking with pure reverent awe. "Leo Alexander Whitmore. Eight pounds, two ounces. He has his mother’s chin."

I reached out a finger, and the newborn immediately clamped his tiny fist around it. The sheer miracle of this child’s survival, after everything he and his mother had endured in the dark, brought a lump to my throat.

"He's beautiful, Alexander," I said softly.

"He wouldn't be here without you, Elena," Alexander said, looking at me with profound, unbreakable respect. "Neither of them would. I owe you a debt I can never fully repay."

"Just make sure he grows up knowing his mother is a warrior," I replied with a smile.

While the hospital room filled with the first moments of peace this family had known in three years, the federal task force was executing the final phase of the Vance family takedown.

At the Westchester County Airport, less than five miles away, a private Gulfstream jet sat on the tarmac with its engines idling.

Cynthia Vance’s primary attorney, Robert Sterling, was frantically loading four heavy aluminum luggage cases into the cargo hold. Inside those cases were sixty million dollars in bearer bonds, bearer gold certificates, and hard drives containing the Vance family’s hidden foreign banking routes.

Sterling climbed the stairs of the jet, panting as he spoke into his secure satellite phone. "Cynthia, the plane is fueled! The pilot has filed a flight plan for Zurich! Where are you?!"

A voice on the other end of the phone didn't belong to Cynthia.

"Ms. Vance is currently in federal custody at the Metropolitan Detention Center, Mr. Sterling," Agent Hayes’s voice came through the speaker with chilling clarity.

Sterling froze on the airstair.

Suddenly, four tactical assault vehicles smashed through the airfield security gates, surrounding the Gulfstream in a blinding circle of high-intensity spotlights. Dozens of heavily armed federal agents emerged, weapons trained on the aircraft.

"Robert Sterling, step down with your hands above your head!" the bullhorn commanded.

Sterling dropped the satellite phone. It shattered on the wet tarmac below.

In the federal holding cell in lower Manhattan, Vanessa Whitmore sat on a cold steel bench, staring at the concrete floor. Her silk dress was ruined, her designer jewelry confiscated, her name stripped of every shred of high-society glamour.

Agent Hayes walked up to the iron bars, holding up an audio recorder.

"Your sister just tried to board an international flight with every dollar left in your joint accounts," Hayes said bluntly. "She left you behind to take the entire criminal fall for Clara’s kidnapping."

Vanessa closed her eyes, a single, bitter tear cutting through the dirt on her face. "Cynthia always was the smart one. But she forgot one thing."

"What's that?" Hayes asked.

"I recorded every phone call we had for the last three years," Vanessa whispered, her voice dead and hollow. "The flash drive is hidden behind the fireplace panel in the penthouse library. Take it. Put her in a cage... and throw away the key."
