Chapter 5 - Whispers from Room 402

Deep in the subterranean annex of Blackwood Ridge, the smell of ozone and medical grade disinfectant grew stronger with every step we took. The underground corridor was lined with numbered doors, each fitted with heavy magnetic locks and small observation windows made of reinforced wire glass.
Alexander moved with lethal precision, clearing each doorway with his sidearm raised.
"Room 401... empty," he whispered, his breathing ragged. "Room 402... Elena, look!"
I rushed to the observation glass of Room 402.
Inside, strapped to an adjustable hospital bed, was a woman. She was pale, her golden-brown hair tangled and matted across the pillows. An IV line ran into her left arm, pumping a clear fluid from an automated electronic infusion pump. Her belly was swollen—visibly, truly eight months pregnant.
A digital fetal monitor beeped erratically beside the bed, showing the baby’s heart rate fluctuating dangerously between 160 and 180 beats per minute.
"Clara!" Alexander cried out.
He tried the heavy steel handle, but the electronic lock flashed a mocking crimson red.
"Stand back!" Alexander raised his weapon, aiming directly at the lock mechanism.
"No, wait!" I yelled, pushing his arm down. "These doors are fitted with pneumatic magnetic seals. If you shatter the lock cylinder with a bullet, the system fails closed permanently! Let me override the circuit!"
I pulled out my maintenance probes, jammed them into the exposed control panel beside the frame, and shorted the primary power relay with my insulated pliers.
A sharp pop of blue sparks burst from the panel. The heavy magnetic bolt hissed and retracted.
Alexander threw the door open with such force that it crashed against the concrete wall. He was at Clara’s bedside in half a second, dropping to his knees and wrapping his large, trembling hands around hers.
"Clara... Clara, my love, I’m here. I’m here," Alexander choked out, tears finally spilling freely down his face.
Clara’s eyelids fluttered weakly. Her lips were cracked and dry. She blinked through the heavy fog of medical sedatives, her unfocused eyes slowly locking onto the man kneeling beside her.
"Alex...?" she breathed, her voice a raspy, fragile whisper. "Am I... am I having the dream again?"
"No, sweetheart. No dream. I'm right here. I've got you," Alexander sobbed, pressing his forehead against her cold knuckles. "I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry I didn't find you sooner."
Clara’s hand weakly squeezed his fingers. Then, her eyes widened with sheer panic, her gaze dropping to the IV line and the electronic pump.
"Alex... the medicine..." Clara gasped, clutching her swollen stomach as a sharp contraction seized her body. "They... they started the drip twenty minutes ago. The doctor... he said they were taking the baby tonight... and that I wouldn't wake up."
I looked at the digital readout on the infusion pump. "They're running a massive overdose of oxytocin mixed with high-potency potassium chloride! It’s designed to force violent labor and trigger cardiac arrest!"
Without waiting a single second, I ripped the IV catheter out of Clara’s arm, pressing a sterile gauze pad from the tray onto the puncture site.
"We need to get her to a real hospital immediately," I said, checking her erratic pulse. "Her contractions are less than three minutes apart, and the fetal heart rate is spiking into dangerous territory. If she doesn't get an emergency cesarean section within the hour, we will lose them both."
Suddenly, the heavy steel door behind us slammed shut with a deafening thud.
The lights in Room 402 instantly cut out, plunging us into total darkness, replaced only by the eerie red emergency strobe flashing above the door.

From the hallway intercom speaker, a cold, clinical voice sounded.
"Mr. Whitmore. You were never supposed to find this wing. Unfortunately, neither you nor your former wife can be permitted to leave Blackwood Ridge alive."
