Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Pen and the Frozen Millions

While Alexander and I stormed the underground corridors of Blackwood Ridge, Marcus Cole was waging an equally brutal war in the heart of Manhattan’s financial district.

Sitting in his high-rise office at two in the morning, Marcus had three federal prosecutors, two forensic accountants, and the chairman of the Whitmore Board of Directors on a secure encrypted conference call.

"Listen to me carefully," Marcus barked into his headset, slamming a stack of financial ledgers onto his desk. "We have obtained the signature sheets for Trust 88-B. Vanessa Vance forged the preliminary notary stamp using an expired digital token from the Vance Foundation. The entire vehicle is fraudulent."

"Marcus," the Whitmore Board Chairman interrupted, his voice trembling from his London penthouse. "If what you’re saying is true, Alexander has been funding the very institution holding his presumed-dead wife captive."

"For thirty-six months," Marcus confirmed, his eyes tracking the flow of offshore wires on his monitors. "Over forty-two million dollars in Whitmore Global operational dividends were routed through shell accounts in the Cayman Islands, directly into the operating budget of the St. Jude Sanctuary. Cynthia Vance wasn't just planning a takeover; she was using Alexander's own fortune to finance Clara's imprisonment."

Back at the St. Regis, federal agents had already cordoned off VIP Dressing Suite B. Cynthia Vance sat handcuffed to a heavy oak table in the hotel’s security holding room, her face twisted in bitter defiance.

"You can’t hold me here without my personal attorney!" Cynthia snarled at the FBI field agent guarding the door. "My family has connections with the Governor! You will lose your careers by morning!"

Special Agent Sarah Hayes stepped into the room, tossing a heavy manila folder onto the table in front of Cynthia.

"Your governor friend just signed off on an emergency federal search warrant for every property owned by the Vance Trust," Agent Hayes said coldly. "And your sister Vanessa is currently in the adjacent interrogation room, spilling every detail about the brake lines on Clara’s Mercedes three years ago."

Cynthia’s eyes narrowed, but a crack in her stone-cold facade appeared. "Vanessa is a weak, spineless fool. She couldn't keep her mouth shut if her life depended on it."

"Her life does depend on it," Hayes replied, leaning over the table. "She’s facing attempted capital murder, human trafficking, kidnapping, and grand larceny. And she just told us who ordered the doctor to induce Clara's labor tonight."

Cynthia’s lips curved into a wicked, desperate smile. "It doesn't matter what Vanessa says. By now, the attending surgeon at Blackwood Ridge has administered the pitocin and the paralytic. The child will be delivered via emergency c-section, and Clara’s weak heart will simply stop under the anesthesia. You'll have an orphan, a dead woman, and zero evidence of physical coercion."

"You really don't know who Alexander Whitmore hired for his security, do you?" Agent Hayes asked quietly.

Cynthia frowned. "Some pathetic hotel guard and a brat."

May you like

"Elena Mercer isn't just a hotel guard," Hayes said with a dry, sharp smile. "She spent eight years running black-ops cyber counterintelligence for the Department of Defense before she retired to raise her daughter. If there's an electronic lock or an encrypted medical protocol at Blackwood, Elena has already torn it to pieces."

Cynthia’s face went dead white.
