Chapter 8 - The Reunion Behind Reinforced Steel

Inside the speeding vehicle, Alexander was stripping off his dress shirt to create pressure bandages, his hands covered in his wife's blood and sweat.

"Clara, look at me," Alexander commanded softly, his voice trembling as he brushed wet strands of hair from her pale, clammy forehead. "Look at my eyes. You survived that river. You survived three years in that dungeon. You are the strongest person I have ever known. Do not give up now."

Clara opened her eyes, swimming with tears and agony. "Alex... our baby boy... save our boy..."

"I'm going to save both of you," Alexander vowed, tears streaming down his cheeks, dropping onto her cheeks. "We are going to raise him together. In the sun. Away from all of this. Just breathe for me. In and out."

I drove like a woman possessed, weaving through the slick curves of the highway at over one hundred miles per hour. The rain beat against the cracked ballistic glass, the wipers struggling to clear the deluge, but my eyes were locked on the road ahead.

Behind us, two sets of high-intensity xenon headlights appeared around the distant highway bend.

"We have company," I announced calmly, though my heart was hammering against my ribs. "Ironclad's pursuit vehicles. They must have had backup units stationed along the perimeter."

"Can we outrun them?" Alexander asked, looking through the rear window.

"On a straightaway, yes. But the highway narrows into a two-lane construction zone three miles ahead," I said. "If they pit-maneuver us in the narrows, we roll into the river gorge."

One of the pursuit SUVs pulled up alongside our left flank, aggressively swerving toward our rear quarter panel to initiate a spinout.

"Brace!" I yelled.

Instead of braking, I tapped the handbrake, cut the wheel hard to the left, and used our heavier curb weight to deliver a vicious counter-ram against their front wheel well.

The pursuer's tire blew out on impact with our reinforced wheel arch. The black truck lost control, spinning wildly across the wet asphalt, flipping twice into the center median barrier in a massive shower of sparks and shredded metal.

The second pursuit vehicle hesitated, dropping back thirty yards.

Suddenly, the night sky above us lit up with blinding white illumination.

A massive searchlight beamed down through the rain clouds, pinning the remaining pursuer in its glare. The thunderous, rhythmic chop of heavy rotor blades shook the entire SUV.

Two New York State Police tactical helicopters descended from the cloud deck, accompanied by four marked state trooper cruisers rocketing up the northbound lanes with sirens screaming.

The speaker from the lead helicopter boomed across the valley: "This is the Federal Bureau of Investigation! Drop your weapons and pull over immediately! You are surrounded!"

The second pursuit vehicle slammed on its brakes, skidding across the highway and surrendering instantly as six police cruisers boxed it in.

"Elena Mercer, this is Special Agent Hayes in the lead bird," the radio crackled. "We have you covered. Escort corridor is established all the way to White Plains. Keep your foot on the gas!"

May you like

A wave of relief washed through the car, but it was cut short by Clara’s piercing scream from the backseat.

"Alexander! He's coming! He's coming right now!"
