Chapter 6 - The Doctor’s Cold Confession

The mechanical lock on the door engaged with a heavy, double-click. Outside the observation window, Dr. Julian Ross—the chief medical officer of the Blackwood facility—stood calmly in his white lab coat, flanked by four armed security guards carrying submachine guns.

"Dr. Ross," Alexander said, his voice dropping into a register of deadly calm as he shielded Clara with his body. "You have thirty seconds to open this door before I ensure you spend the remainder of your life in solitary confinement."

Ross adjusted his wire-rimmed glasses, completely unfazed. "Mr. Whitmore, I am being paid thirty million dollars by Cynthia Vance's offshore trust to ensure that the legitimate heir of Whitmore Global is safely delivered, and that all medical liabilities are scrubbed permanently. Do you honestly believe a few verbal threats are going to change the outcome of tonight?"

"You're a doctor," I spoke into the room's wall microphone, trying to buy time while my fingers worked blindly under the medical cart, disconnecting the heavy steel oxygen tanks. "You took an oath. That woman is carrying a living child, and you've poisoned her system."

"Her sacrifice will ensure the financial solvency of three major corporations," Ross replied smoothly through the speaker. "The fire suppression system in Room 402 utilizes concentrated halon gas to extinguish electrical fires without damaging high-end medical equipment. In approximately ninety seconds, the halon will displace all oxygen in that room. You will all fall peacefully unconscious. Then, my surgical team will enter, extract the infant, and complete the procedure."

A loud hiss echoed from the ceiling vents. The distinct, odorless chill of halon gas began to flood the small chamber.

Clara gasped for air, her contractions intensifying as she cried out in agony, clutching Alexander’s arm. "Alex... the baby... I can't breathe!"

"Elena!" Alexander yelled, his weapon useless against four inches of bulletproof composite glass. "What do we do?!"

"Get her onto the floor! Halon is heavier than air initially, but the ventilation returns are down low!" I shouted.

I grabbed the fifty-pound pressurized steel oxygen tank from the emergency resuscitation cart. I spun the main pressure valve completely open, aiming the pure oxygen flow directly into Clara’s face so she could breathe, then looked at the heavy brass regulator head.

"Alexander! Take this oxygen mask and put it on Clara!" I ordered.

I took the secondary oxygen cylinder, laid it horizontally across the surgical steel rolling table, and aimed the heavy brass valve directly at the bottom hinge of the reinforced security door.

"What are you doing?!" Alexander asked, holding the mask over Clara's mouth and nose while struggling to breathe the thinning air himself.

"Physics," I said through gritted teeth.

I grabbed the heavy cast-iron fire extinguisher from the wall mount, swung it with every ounce of strength I had, and sheared the high-pressure brass valve clean off the steel cylinder.

BOOM!

The two-thousand-PSI pressurized tank transformed instantly into a kinetic rocket. It launched forward like an artillery shell, slamming directly into the lower door hinge and the magnetic lock housing with catastrophic force.

The steel door buckled outward, tearing free from the concrete frame with a screech of shearing bolts. The halon gas exploded out into the hallway in a thick white cloud of pressure, violently knocking Dr. Ross and his four guards off their feet.

"Move! Now!" I shouted, coughing through the haze.

Alexander didn't hesitate. He scooped Clara into his arms, lifting her off the bed with fierce, protective strength, while I grabbed the emergency medical kit and Alexander’s fallen firearm from the floor.

As we stumbled out through the fractured doorway, Dr. Ross was scrambling on his hands and knees to retrieve his dropped radio.

I stepped up and brought the heavy butt of the flashlight down across his jaw, knocking him out cold onto the linoleum floor.

"That's for the halon, Doctor," I muttered.

Behind us, the remaining two guards were recovering from the shockwave, raising their weapons.

"Elena! The loading bay!" Alexander yelled, carrying Clara as fast as his legs could move down the smoke-filled corridor.
