Chapter 8 - The Red Carpet Reveal

With the legal battle decisively swinging in our favor, my life transitioned into a whirlwind of creative triumph and family healing.
Elsie was gaining weight rapidly, her cheeks rounding out into chubby, rosy perfection. Mason was thriving in his new routine, loving his spacious backyard in Oakridge Estates without the toxic tension that had poisoned our home for years.
Six weeks after the court hearing, the official press conference and red carpet launch for the movie adaptation of The Woman Behind the Door took place at the prestigious Beverly Hills Hotel in Los Angeles.
A24 pulled out every stop. The ballroom was transformed into an ethereal noir landscape matching the aesthetic of the novel. Over two hundred entertainment journalists, major television networks, and A-list celebrities were in attendance.
I arrived in a custom midnight-blue velvet gown with an off-the-shoulder neckline, accompanied by Marcus Vance, who looked effortlessly aristocratic beside me.
The flashing of a hundred camera lenses illuminated the carpet as we stepped onto the media line.
"Adrienne! Over here! Variety!"
"Adrienne, The Hollywood Reporter! Who is starring as the female lead?!"
"Evelyn North, give us a smile for Entertainment Tonight!"
I stopped at the main broadcast riser where Jonah Reed was waiting with a beaming smile.
"You look like royalty, Adrienne," Jonah whispered. "The studio just announced that Charlize Theron and Michael B. Jordan have officially signed on as the leads."
"That’s incredible, Jonah," I smiled, feeling a profound sense of creative fulfillment that had been suppressed for a decade.
As I began speaking to a correspondent from The New York Times, a sudden commotion erupted near the public barricades at the rear of the press enclosure.
Serena Pike was standing behind the metal gate, holding a microphone with a low-tier internet blog logo instead of her prestigious Channel 4 emblem. Her hair was unwashed, her makeup hastily applied, looking entirely disheveled compared to her former polished image.
"Adrienne!" Serena shrieked over the crowd noise. "Adrienne, look at me! You orchestrated this! You got me fired from Channel 4!"
The security team immediately moved toward Serena, but I raised a calm hand, signaling them to pause.
I walked over to the media barricade, surrounded by rolling cameras and intrigued reporters.
"Serena," I said calmly, looking down at her from the elevated carpet. "You were fired because Channel 4’s ethics committee discovered you used station resources to run smear campaigns and accepted illegal corporate gifts from a failing startup CEO."
"You destroyed Blake’s life!" Serena screamed, her voice cracking on national livestream. "His office was padlocked yesterday! His Porsche was repossessed this morning! He’s sleeping on a pull-out couch in my tiny apartment, and he doesn't have a dime left!"
I tilted my head, looking at her with genuine pity.
"You wanted him because you thought he was a wealthy visionary, Serena," I said softly, every word picked up by the boom mics overhead. "You stole a man who was entirely built out of my generosity. You wanted his empire? Congratulations. You can keep the ashes."

The press pack erupted in furious flashes, capturing Serena’s humiliated, weeping face as private security quietly escorted her out of the hotel grounds.
I turned back to the red carpet, took Marcus’s offered arm, and walked into my premiere without looking back once.
