Chapter 7 - The Custody Trap Backfires

By Monday morning, the media fallout was catastrophic for Blake Sterling and Serena Pike.

The footage of Blake’s public meltdown at the Bell Harbor Gala had gone viral on TikTok and Twitter, accumulating over fifteen million views in thirty-six hours under the hashtag #EvelynNorthReveal. Entertainment blogs and local newspapers ran side-by-side photos of Blake’s gala appearance with Serena while I was recovering in the hospital from an emergency C-section.

Desperate to regain leverage, Blake and his attorney, Richard Hayes, filed an emergency petition in King County Family Court demanding 50/50 physical custody of seven-year-old Mason and substantial temporary spousal support from my estate.

At ten o'clock Wednesday morning, we met inside the chambers of Judge Eleanor Morales.

Blake sat at the respondent table looking exhausted, dressed in a hastily ironed suit with dark bags under his eyes. Richard Hayes, an aging attorney who looked entirely out of his depth, shuffled through a messy stack of papers.

I sat on the petitioner side with Marcus Vance. I wore a tailored ivory pantsuit, my demeanor calm, composed, and completely unshakeable.

"Your Honor," Richard Hayes began, clearing his throat nervously. "My client, Mr. Blake Sterling, has been the victim of massive financial concealment. For nearly a decade, Mrs. Sterling accumulated tens of millions of dollars while concealing those assets within complex corporate shells, deliberately misleading my client into assuming severe financial strain. Furthermore, Mrs. Sterling has unilaterally evicted Mr. Sterling and alienated his parental rights."

Judge Morales adjusted her reading glasses, looking down at Hayes with an unreadable expression. "Mr. Hayes, are you suggesting that a spouse writing best-selling novels under a registered pseudonym constitutes criminal concealment when the corporate tax returns were filed jointly every April?"

Hayes blinked. "Jointly?"

Marcus Vance stood up, buttoning his jacket. "Your Honor, if I may."

Marcus handed three thick, tabbed binders to the bailiff, who placed one before the judge and one before Hayes.

"For seven consecutive tax years," Marcus stated with razor precision, "Mrs. Adrienne Vance-North presented the full Schedule K-1 forms and multi-million-dollar royalty distributions to Mr. Sterling for signature. Mr. Sterling consistently signed those joint federal filings without reading them, dismissing them as—and I quote from his own email correspondence—'Adrienne’s irrelevant paperwork.'"

Judge Morales flipped through the signed tax returns, her eyebrows arching upward. "These bear Mr. Sterling's notarized signature on every single annual disclosure."

"Furthermore," Marcus continued, pacing slowly, "we have submitted a certified forensic audit of Sterling Logic’s operating accounts. Over the past three years, Mr. Sterling diverted $380,000 from company funds to finance luxury hotel suites, jewelry purchases at Tiffany & Co., and exotic vacations for himself and Ms. Serena Pike."

Blake jumped to his feet. "Those were legitimate client entertainment expenses!"

"Sit down, Mr. Sterling!" Judge Morales barked, slamming her gavel once with thunderous finality.

Blake sank back into his leather chair, trembling with rage.

Marcus turned to the final tab of his dossier. "Regarding custody: on the night of November 14th, while Mrs. North was undergoing an emergency surgical intervention due to fetal distress, Mr. Sterling left the hospital within three hours to attend a social gala. We have submitted hospital security footage, nursing logs, and text messages proving that Mr. Sterling did not visit his newborn daughter, Elsie, in the NICU a single time during her six-day hospitalization."

Judge Morales looked directly at Blake, her eyes blazing with cold judicial fury.

"Mr. Sterling," the judge said, her voice dropping into a dangerous cadence. "In thirty-two years on the family bench, I have rarely witnessed such an appalling display of parental neglect and bad-faith litigation."

"Your Honor, please—" Hayes tried to intervene.

"Silence, counsel!" Judge Morales commanded. "I am ruling immediately on the temporary motions. Sole legal and primary physical custody of Mason Sterling and Elsie Sterling is awarded entirely to the mother, Adrienne Vance-North."

Blake gasped, clutching the table edge.

"Mr. Sterling is granted supervised visitation with Mason for two hours every alternate Saturday at a court-approved family center, contingent upon passing routine substance and psychological evaluations. He will have zero visitation rights regarding the infant until further review."

"And spousal support?" Hayes stammered weakly.

"Denied in its entirety," Judge Morales ruled sharply. "In fact, based on the diversion of marital funds to his mistress, Mr. Sterling is ordered to pay $4,200 per month in statutory child support, effective immediately. Court is adjourned."
