Chapter 6 - Cut Off From The Invisible Lifeline

The ballroom felt suffocatingly quiet around Blake, even as the crowd around them continued to cheer.
I stood at the top of the mezzanine landing, looking down at the sea of faces. My eyes locked directly onto Blake Sterling. His jaw was slack, his skin pale as marble, his velvet tuxedo suddenly looking like an oversized costume on a man who had shrunk to nothing.
Beside him, Serena Pike was staring at me with pure horror, her manicured hands trembling as she clutched her gold evening clutch.
"Ladies and gentlemen," I spoke into the podium microphone, my voice steady, melodious, and amplified through the state-of-the-art acoustic sound system. "Thank you for this extraordinary welcome. For years, I chose anonymity because I believed the work should speak louder than the author. But life has a way of demanding courage. As I embark on producing the cinematic adaptation of The Woman Behind the Door, I am proud to step into the light—not just as Evelyn North, but as Adrienne Vance-North."
The room erupted into another round of enthusiastic applause. Studio heads, venture capitalists, and civic leaders clinked their glasses in salute.
I stepped away from the podium and was immediately surrounded by David Sterling, Jonathan Hayes, and two senior executives from A24.
"Brilliant speech, Adrienne," David Sterling beamed. "We’ve already scheduled the initial screenplay table read in Los Angeles for next month."
"Thank you, David. I’m looking forward to shaping the production," I answered with an effortless smile.
From the edge of the VIP cordon, Blake shoved past a security guard, frantically waving his arms.
"Adrienne! Adrienne, let me through!" Blake shouted, his voice cracking with desperation. "I’m her husband! Let me through this barricade!"
The private security detail, hired specifically by Marcus Vance’s security division, stepped in front of Blake like an immovable wall of stone.
"Step back, sir," the lead guard ordered.
"You don't understand!" Blake yelled, sweat glistening on his forehead. "She’s my wife! We live in the same house!"
"You were legally evicted forty-eight hours ago, Mr. Sterling," Marcus Vance’s voice cut through the chaos like a scalpel. Marcus stepped to the edge of the velvet rope, looking down at Blake with icy disdain. "And you are currently under a temporary restraining order restricting contact with Mrs. North outside of scheduled family court mediation."
Serena Pike marched up behind Blake, her face contorted in fury. "Adrienne! Is this some kind of sick joke?! You’ve been hiding millions of dollars while Blake was struggling to keep his company afloat?!"
I turned slowly, looking Serena directly in the eyes with absolute composure.
"I didn't hide a thing, Serena," I replied clearly, loud enough for several nearby journalists and recording smartphones to capture every syllable. "My contracts have always been public record under my legal corporate banner. Blake simply never cared enough to ask what I was writing when I was awake at two in the morning after putting our son to bed. He was too busy entertaining local news anchors."
A chorus of gasps rippled through the gathering crowd. Several camera flashes lit up the hallway.
"Adrienne, please!" Blake pleaded, his arrogant facade completely shattered. "We need to talk in private! Sterling Logic is facing a cash crunch on Monday—"
"Sterling Logic is no longer my concern, Blake," I said softly. "In fact, you should check your corporate banking app right now."
Blake froze. With shaking fingers, he pulled his phone from his tuxedo pocket and opened his commercial account portal.
A red alert flashed on his screen:
NOTICE: CREDIT FACILITY TERMINATED. COLLATERAL GUARANTEE REVOKED BY HIGHLAND HORIZON TRUST.
ACCOUNT BALANCE: -$142,500.00 (OVERDRAFT SUSPENSION).
"You... you pulled the bank guarantee?" Blake whispered, looking up in sheer terror.

"I removed the life support that kept your vanity project alive for seven years," I said coldly. "Enjoy your gala, Blake. You earned every bit of this."
I turned my back on him and walked deeper into the VIP lounge with Marcus and Jonah, leaving Blake standing amidst the shattered glass of his own ruined life.
