Chapter 3 - The Secret Millions And The Master Strategist

By day four, Elsie was moved out of the NICU into my private recovery suite. Holding her against my chest, feeling her steady heartbeat, gave me an indomitable strength I hadn’t known I possessed.

My seven-year-old son, Mason, had been brought to the hospital by Keira. When the boy saw his baby sister, his face lit up with an innocent, unadulterated joy that melted away the residual trauma of the past week.

"She’s so tiny, Mom," Mason whispered, kissing Elsie’s forehead with profound gentleness. "Is Dad coming to see her?"

I stroked Mason’s hair, keeping my voice sweet and measured. "Dad is very busy working right now, sweetheart. But you and I are going to take the best care of Elsie in the world."

While Mason sat in the corner reading a graphic novel, the door opened and Marcus Vance walked into the room.

Marcus was thirty-four, tall, impeccably groomed in a bespoke navy three-piece suit, with piercing gray eyes that missed nothing. Unlike Blake, who carried himself with loud, insecure bravado, Marcus exuded the lethal calm of an apex predator who never needed to raise his voice.

"Adrienne," Marcus said, extending a warm, respectful hand. "It’s good to see you sitting up. Keira has briefed me thoroughly. You are holding all four aces."

"Tell me what we’re looking at, Marcus," I said, gesturing for him to take a seat.

Marcus laid a leather-bound folio on the rolling tray table. "Blake’s attorney, Richard Hayes, served this preliminary settlement demand to your home address yesterday. They obviously expected you to be illiterate in finance."

I opened the document and skimmed the terms.

Blake was demanding:

Sole possession of our 5,200-square-foot home in the prestigious Oakridge Estates.

50/50 legal custody of Mason, but zero physical custody of Elsie until she reached eighteen months, citing business obligations.

An insulting alimony payment of $1,800 per month for twenty-four months, on the condition that I waive all claims to Sterling Logic equity and its intellectual property.

An immediate non-disclosure agreement forbidding me from discussing the cause of our separation with media or business contacts.

"He actually thinks he owns the Oakridge estate," I noted with a grim smile.

"He does," Marcus chuckled softly. "Because his name is on the front entry gate plaque. What Blake forgot—or never bothered to check—is that the title deed to Oakridge Estates was transferred directly from the developer to Highland Horizon LLC, an entity owned entirely by Evelyn North’s private trust."

"He was on the original mortgage application," I remembered.

"Yes, but when his credit score tanked five years ago during his failed logistics startup, you personally bought out the primary mortgage note through your Delaware LLC to prevent foreclosure. Blake isn't the owner, Adrienne. He is, legally speaking, a non-paying tenant."

"And his company?"

Marcus turned a page in the ledger. "Sterling Logic survives on a $500,000 revolving line of credit backed by Pacific Crest Bank. Pacific Crest only extended that line because Vance & North Holdings guaranteed the collateral four years ago. Furthermore, Blake just leased an eight-thousand-dollar-a-month penthouse suite in downtown Seattle to impress Serena Pike."

"He’s spending money he doesn't have on a mistress he barely knows," I said.

"Precisely. He assumes that you will roll over, take the $1,800 a month, and vanish into obscurity. He has no idea that the ground beneath his feet is made of glass, and you are holding the hammer."

"What’s our move?"

"We don't file a counter-suit yet," Marcus advised, leaning in. "Let him dig his grave on camera. Serena Pike has arranged for Blake to appear on Channel 4’s Pacific Business Spotlight this Friday night. They’re marketing him as the region’s most eligible tech visionary. Let him boast about his wealth and autonomy on live television. The more assets he claims to own publicly, the harder the perjury charges and fraud penalties will hit him when we unveil the true ownership ledgers in open court."

"And the movie deal?"

Marcus’s eyes flashed with genuine admiration. "Jonah Reed finalized the wire transfer this morning. A24 deposited the initial $6.2 million advance into your private corporate vault. You are currently worth an estimated $28 million in liquid assets, Adrienne. Blake Sterling is technically worth negative four hundred thousand dollars."

I looked down at Elsie sleeping soundly in my arms, then across the room at Mason.

"Let the show begin," I whispered.
