Chapter 5 - The Gala That Cost Him Everything

Two days after the humiliating eviction, Blake was living in the downtown penthouse he couldn't afford, desperately trying to salvage his social standing.
Serena Pike was determined to ignore the eviction incident, convincing Blake that once his software company secured an upcoming venture capital injection, they could buy a mansion twice the size of Oakridge Estates.
Friday evening arrived: the annual Seattle Innovation & Media Gala at the Bell Harbor International Conference Center.
The event was packed with tech executives, venture capitalists, Hollywood producers scouting Pacific Northwest talent, and high-profile journalists. Blake arrived on Serena’s arm, wearing an ostentatious velvet tuxedo, flashing a rehearsed smile for the photographers on the step-and-repeat banner.
Serena pulled him directly toward a circle of elite investors, including Jonathan Hayes—the senior partner of Horizon Venture Capital—and David Sterling (no relation), a prominent film producer from Los Angeles.
"Jonathan! David!" Serena purred, nudging Blake forward. "You remember Blake Sterling, CEO of Sterling Logic. His new enterprise automation platform is projected to revolutionize small business operations this quarter."
Jonathan Hayes offered a polite, lukewarm nod. "Good evening, Blake. Though frankly, we’re a bit preoccupied tonight. Everyone in this room is waiting for the guest of honor."
Blake puffed out his chest, attempting to insert himself into the inner circle. "Ah, yes. I hear A24 and Plan B executives flew in from Burbank this afternoon. Who is the author they’re celebrating? Some local poet?"
David Sterling laughed heartily. "A poet? Try the biggest literary titan of the decade, Blake. Evelyn North. Her psychological thriller, The Woman Behind the Door, just crossed twelve million copies sold worldwide. The film rights cleared for an astronomical sum this week."
Serena’s eyes sparkled with opportunistic greed. "Is Evelyn North here tonight? I’ve been trying to secure an exclusive interview with her for six months! Her agency keeps blocking every television network."
"She’s arriving shortly," David Sterling noted, checking his platinum watch. "The studio heads arranged a private reception in the VIP mezzanine. Only Tier-1 patrons and direct invited guests are allowed upstairs."
Blake sneered dismissively. "These anonymous internet writers are all the same. Probably some bitter, middle-aged academic hiding in a basement because she lacks real-world charisma. In tech, if you don't show your face, you don't exist."
"Careful how you speak about genius, Mr. Sterling," Jonathan Hayes said coldly. "Evelyn North’s intellectual property generated more revenue in forty-eight hours than Sterling Logic has generated in its entire seven-year history."
Blake’s smile froze, a sudden twitch developing beneath his left eyelid.
Suddenly, the house lights dimmed slightly, and a spotlight shifted toward the grand staircase leading from the private VIP entrance.
The Master of Ceremonies stepped up to the podium microphone.
"Ladies and gentlemen, esteemed guests... tonight, we have the rare privilege of welcoming the visionary mind behind the global phenomenon The Woman Behind the Door. Please welcome the author, executive producer, and cultural icon... Evelyn North!"
The ballroom erupted into deafening applause.
Blake and Serena turned toward the staircase, expecting an eccentric recluse.
Down the sweeping marble stairs walked a woman in an emerald silk Christian Dior couture gown that clung flawlessly to an elegant silhouette. Her dark hair cascaded over bare shoulders in Hollywood waves, her lips painted a striking ruby red, her neck adorned with a diamond necklace from Cartier.
She was flanked by Marcus Vance on her left, looking dashing in a tailored tuxedo, and Jonah Reed, the legendary Manhattan literary agent, on her right.
Blake dropped his champagne glass.
The crystal shattered against the parquet floor, spraying vintage Dom Pérignon across Serena’s designer heels.
"Adrienne?" Blake gasped, his knees visibly buckling.

"What did you just say?" Serena hissed, grabbing his forearm. "Blake, who is that?!"
"That’s... that’s my wife," Blake choked out, the room spinning violently around him.
