Chapter 7 - A Knock Before the Turkey is Carved

At 1:08 PM, the caterers carried out the centerpiece of the feast: a golden-brown, herb-crusted thirty-pound turkey, presented on a massive silver platter.

The dining room was filled with the warm, rich aromas of roasted sage, melted butter, and spiced wine. Marcus was in the middle of delivering a meticulously rehearsed presentation on how he intended to restructure Vanguard Meridian’s municipal portfolio when the sound of heavy tires crunching over the gravel driveway interrupted him.

Sylvia frowned, setting her silver spoon down. "Marcus, did you hire additional valets?"

"No," Marcus said, glancing toward the front windows. "The security gate was set to private access only."

Suddenly, the low, mechanical rumble of multiple heavy diesel engines shook the large glass panes of the dining room. Through the frosted side windows, flashing strobes of crimson and cobalt blue cut through the gray afternoon light, casting frantic, pulsing shadows across the crystal chandeliers.

"What on earth is that?" Veronica asked, her wine glass freezing halfway to her lips.

Before Marcus could answer, the heavy front double doors were struck with three massive, concussive blows that reverberated through the entire eight-thousand-square-foot house.

BOOM. BOOM. BOOM.

"POLICE DEPARTMENT! OPEN THE DOOR! SEARCH WARRANT!" a booming voice echoed through the foyer.

Sylvia gasped, clutching her pearls. "How dare they! Marcus, call the Police Commissioner immediately! This is an outrage!"

Marcus’s face went completely pale. His heart hammered violently against his ribs. He set his napkin down, trying to maintain his composure in front of Arthur Sterling, who was watching the scene with cold, detached interest.

"There must be some clerical error regarding the neighborhood security patrol," Marcus stammered, standing up and smoothing his jacket. "Excuse me for one moment, Arthur. I’ll clear this up instantly."

Marcus walked briskly into the grand foyer. Through the reeded glass beside the door, he could see at least a dozen uniformed officers, tactical tactical-entry units in body armor, and forensic investigators carrying aluminum equipment cases.

Marcus pulled the heavy door open, his voice dripping with arrogant indignation. "What is the meaning of this? Do you know who I am? I am Marcus Bradley, Vice President at Vanguard Meridian, and I am hosting a private high-profile event. Get off my property immediately before I have your badges!"

Lieutenant Frank Miller stepped forward from the front rank, holding a signed, stamped federal search warrant in his gloved hand.

"Marcus Bradley," Frank said in a voice that cut like broken glass. "Step away from the door and place your hands on your head."

"Are you insane?" Marcus yelled, taking a step back. "I’m not touching anything! Mother! Call our attorney!"

Sylvia marched into the foyer, brandishing her silver cane like a weapon. "Get out of my house, you filthy thugs! How dare you barge into a private residence on a holiday! I will have every single one of you fired by sundown!"

Frank Miller didn't even blink. He raised his hand and signaled the tactical team behind him. "Entry team, secure the perimeter. Forensics, deploy the evidentiary light arrays. Execute the warrant."
