Chapter 13 - Arraignment Without Bail

Seventy-two hours later, the United States District Court for the Northern District was packed to standing room only.

Marcus Bradley sat at the defense table clad in an orange prison jumpsuit, his hands shackled to a heavy chain around his waist. His high-priced defense attorney, Jonathan Blake—hired by Sylvia’s remaining distant relatives—stood beside him, sweating through his three-thousand-dollar suit.

Sylvia sat three feet away in a matching orange jumpsuit, looking aged twenty years without her makeup, hair styling, and pearl jewelry.

I stood at the prosecution podium, clad in my traditional black courtroom robe, representing the United States and the State as Special Deputy Prosecutor.

"Your Honor," Attorney Blake argued, addressing Senior Judge Robert Holbrook on the bench. "My clients are prominent members of this community with no prior criminal records. The allegations, while severe, stem from a domestic dispute that has been grossly exaggerated by the prosecution. We request bail be set at a reasonable amount of two hundred and fifty thousand dollars each, with electronic home monitoring at the Whispering Pines residence."

Judge Holbrook looked over his half-moon spectacles at Blake with an expression of pure, unadulterated disdain.

"Mr. Blake," Judge Holbrook said, his voice booming through the silent courtroom. "Your clients are charged with dragging an injured, half-naked woman through sub-zero temperatures and leaving her to die on a transit bench so they could host a holiday luncheon. They are also facing twenty-four counts of federal wire fraud, witness tampering, and racketeering."

Judge Holbrook turned his gaze toward me. "Counselor Vance, does the government wish to be heard on bail?"

I stepped forward to the center of the well, holding a single manila folder.

"The government moves for permanent pre-trial detention without bail under the Federal Bail Reform Act, Section 3142," I stated, my voice ringing with absolute clarity. "Marcus Bradley and Sylvia Bradley represent an extraordinary danger to the community, an acute flight risk given their offshore financial holdings, and an existential threat to the primary witness, Chloe Vance. Furthermore, we have submitted forensic documentation demonstrating that the defendants attempted to scrub physical crime scenes and destroy federal subpoena records within minutes of committing their violent acts."

Marcus looked up at me from the defense table, his eyes filled with a desperate, pleading terror. "Eleanor... please... I made a mistake..."

"You didn't make a mistake, Marcus," I said, turning slightly to look him dead in the eyes. "You made a calculated decision to destroy another human being for profit and vanity. And now, the law will calculate your sentence."

Judge Holbrook brought his heavy wooden gavel down with a thunderous CRACK.

"Bail is denied. The defendants will remain remanded to the custody of the United States Marshals Service pending trial. Court is adjourned."

Marcus slumped forward onto the defense table, sobbing hysterically as the marshals unlocked his chair and dragged him toward the holding cells below.
