Chapter 4 - Chain of Custody

By 7:45 AM, the Trauma Intensive Care Unit at St. Jude's Hospital had become an impromptu tactical headquarters.

Chloe was hooked up to two IV lines, her core body temperature stabilized at ninety-eight degrees. Her left eye was swollen shut, and purple contusions bloomed across her neck, arms, and torso like dark orchids. A hospital forensic team was meticulously documenting every abrasion with high-resolution digital cameras and ultraviolet crime-scene lights.

Dr. Sarah Lin, the chief trauma surgeon and an old friend of mine, pulled off her latex gloves and walked over to where I stood by the window.

"She’s going to survive, Eleanor," Sarah said softly, her voice trembling with restrained anger. "She has three fractured ribs, a severe concussion, and frostbite on her toes that will take weeks to heal. But the psychological trauma... God, Eleanor, they dragged her down a flight of stairs. We found microscopic fibers from a wool-and-silk carpet embedded deep in the lacerations on her knees and forearms."

"Preserve every single fiber, Sarah," I said, my voice cold as liquid nitrogen. "I want full DNA profiling on the skin under her fingernails. When she fought back, she scratched Marcus’s face and Sylvia’s forearms. I want their epithelial cells cataloged in triplicate."

"Already done," Sarah replied. "The forensic nurse sealed the swabs in evidence bags five minutes ago. Detective Miller’s team just signed the custody transfer."

Frank Miller walked into the ICU room, holding a secure encrypted tablet. His face was grim, but his eyes burned with professional fury.

"We pulled the bus terminal surveillance, Eleanor," Frank said, handing me the screen. "It’s crystal clear. Marcus Bradley’s black Mercedes S-Class pulled up to Bay 6 at 4:42 AM. Marcus got out, opened the back door, and physically dragged Chloe out by her hair and arms. She couldn't even stand. He threw her onto that metal bench, tossed her phone into the storm drain across the street, and sped off."

"Did you recover the phone from the storm drain?" I asked.

"Forensic dive team just fished it out. It’s in a Faraday bag right now, heading to the cyber lab. Even if it’s water-damaged, our techs will pull every text, location ping, and voice memo within two hours."

I looked over at my daughter’s bruised, sleeping face. She looked so fragile beneath the white hospital sheets, yet so remarkably brave. She had endured hours of terror, but she had kept herself alive until I arrived.

"Frank," I said, turning back to the detective. "It’s time to move on the financial front. Marcus Bradley didn't just commit domestic violence this morning. He did it to protect a massive corporate fraud scheme."

Frank raised an eyebrow. "What do you know?"

"For the past six months, Chloe noticed discrepancies in the engineering sign-offs for Vanguard Meridian’s multi-million-dollar municipal contracts," I explained, pulling out a USB drive from my coat pocket. "Marcus was using her professional engineering stamp without her consent to certify sub-standard steel and concrete for public infrastructure projects, pocketing the multi-million-dollar cost differences through an offshore shell company called 'Aegis Holdings.'"

Frank sucked in a sharp breath. "That’s federal wire fraud, public endangerment, and racketeering."

"And Sylvia Bradley is listed as the sole trustee of the Aegis charitable foundation," I continued. "They were using the foundation to launder the kickbacks. Chloe discovered the paper trail last night. That’s why they attacked her. It wasn't just a domestic dispute over a mistress; it was an attempted execution to silence a federal whistleblower."

Frank’s radio chirped. A voice crackled through the speaker: "Lieutenant Miller, Judge Holbrook just issued the dynamic entry warrant for 742 Whispering Pines Court. Search and seizure for all electronic devices, physical evidence of violence, and immediate detention of Marcus and Sylvia Bradley."

I looked at my watch. It was 8:15 AM.

"Hold the warrant execution until exactly 1:15 PM," I ordered.

Frank looked at me, a slow, predatory grin spreading across his face. "You want them to serve the turkey first?"

"I want Arthur Sterling, the board of directors, and every high-society guest to have their linen napkins on their laps and their wine glasses full," I said softly. "I want Marcus to believe he has won everything in the world—right up to the exact second the handcuffs click around his wrists."
