Chapter 12 - The Fall of the House of Sylvia

The front gates of Whispering Pines Court were completely blocked by a convoy of seven police cruisers, two federal evidence vans, and a growing crowd of wealthy neighbors who had stepped out onto their manicured lawns to witness the spectacle.
It was 1:45 PM on Thanksgiving Day.
The neighbors watched in stunned silence as Marcus Bradley, the golden boy of Vanguard Meridian, was led down his own front steps in steel handcuffs, his head bowed, weeping openly as news cameras from the local affiliate—tipped off by Frank Miller’s press liaison—flashed relentlessly in his face.
Right behind him came Sylvia Bradley, stripped of her jewelry, her emerald robe dragging in the freezing slush, screaming profanities at the officers as she was bundled into the back of a police transport van.
Veronica Vance followed in tears, holding her designer red dress off the wet pavement, her wrists bound tightly in zip-ties as an IRS agent escorted her to an unmarked cruiser.
Arthur Sterling walked out onto the porch, standing beside me as the final police car pulled away, its sirens echoing through the wealthy enclave.
"Counselor Vance," Sterling said, offering his hand. "I cannot express how deeply sorry I am for what your daughter endured. Had I known even an inkling of Bradley’s true character, he would have been removed from our firm months ago."
I shook his hand firmly. "Your firm’s internal audit was compromised by Bradley’s associates, Mr. Sterling. I suggest you cooperate fully with the Department of Justice’s investigation into the municipal bond allocations."
"Every ledger, every server, and every email will be delivered to your office by 8:00 AM tomorrow," Sterling promised. "And if there is anything—anything at all—that Vanguard Meridian can do to assist Chloe’s medical recovery and professional career, consider it done."

"Chloe will rebuild her life on her own terms, Mr. Sterling," I replied. "She has the strength of ten men like Marcus."
I turned my back on the empty, echoing mansion, got into my Subaru Outback, and drove back toward St. Jude’s Hospital.
