Chapter 11 - Eleanor Steps into the Light

Frank Miller stepped behind Marcus, grabbed his wrists, and wrenched them behind his back. The sharp, mechanical CLICK-CLACK of the steel handcuffs locking around his wrists echoed through the cavernous foyer.

"Marcus Bradley, you are under arrest for Aggravated Kidnapping, Attempted Murder, Felony Domestic Battery, and Spoliation of Evidence," Frank recited with cold professionalism. "You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."

"Eleanor!" Marcus screamed, thrashing against Frank’s grip as he was forced down onto his knees on the cold, bloodstained marble. "Eleanor, tell them to stop! You’re Chloe’s mother! We’re family! Think of Chloe! If I go to prison, she won't get a single penny of alimony! She’ll be left with nothing!"

I knelt down in front of Marcus, looking directly into his terrified, bloodshot eyes.

"You really don't understand how the law works, do you, Marcus?" I whispered softly. "Under the state’s Slayer and Felonious Forfeiture Statute, an individual who attempts to murder or permanently incapacitate their spouse forfeits all rights to marital property, joint assets, and separate corporate holdings."

Marcus’s breath hitched in his throat.

"Every single asset you thought you owned," I continued, tapping the black binder against his chest, "the Whispering Pines estate, your investment portfolio, the sports cars in the garage, and your offshore Cayman balances—have been placed into an immediate federal receivership trust. By tomorrow morning, every square foot of this property will belong exclusively to Chloe."

"No..." Sylvia whimpered from the floor, being helped into zip-ties by two female officers. "Not my house... this is my family’s legacy..."

"Your family’s legacy was built on fraud, theft, and cruelty, Sylvia," I said, turning to face the broken matriarch. "Your Aegis Foundation has been seized by the IRS Criminal Division. Your bank accounts are frozen. The country club has already received a copy of the federal indictment. By tomorrow afternoon, your name will be stripped from every charity board in the state."

Sylvia began to sob uncontrollably, her face buried against the muddy, boot-tracked marble floor she had spent all morning obsessing over.

Two officers hauled Marcus to his feet. His bespoke silk shirt was torn at the shoulder, his expensive hair was matted with sweat, and the sandalwood cologne could not mask the smell of raw, unadulterated fear pouring from his skin.

"Take them out," I ordered.
