Chapter 6 - The Guest of Honor

At 12:00 PM sharp, a gleaming black Rolls-Royce Phantom pulled up the long, winding cobblestone driveway of 742 Whispering Pines Court.

Marcus stood on the front porch, clad in a custom midnight-blue Ralph Lauren suit, his arm linked with Veronica, who looked radiant in her crimson gown and diamond jewelry. Sylvia stood beside them, leaning gracefully on an antique silver-topped cane, her face an immaculate mask of high-society elegance.

The driver opened the door of the Rolls-Royce, and Arthur Sterling stepped out.

Sterling was a sixty-five-year-old titan of private equity: silver-haired, impeccably tailored, and wielding immense influence across the eastern seaboard. He was a man who valued discipline, traditional propriety, and absolute integrity above all else—or at least, that was the public persona Marcus had spent months studying.

"Arthur! Welcome to our home," Marcus said, stepping forward with an outstretched hand and a practiced, dazzling smile. "Happy Thanksgiving."

Arthur Sterling shook his hand firmly, his sharp gray eyes scanning the expansive estate. "Marcus. A magnificent property. And this must be Veronica. I was surprised to hear Chloe wasn't feeling well today."

Sylvia stepped forward with a sorrowful, practiced sigh. "Tragic, really, Mr. Sterling. Chloe suffered a sudden, severe emotional breakdown early this morning. We did everything we could to comfort her, but she insisted on returning to her mother’s home in the country. Marcus was heartbroken, of course, but Veronica was gracious enough to step in and assist with our hosting duties."

"Family matters can be... complicated," Sterling said vaguely, his expression unreadable. "Let us hope she recovers her senses."

"Indeed," Marcus added quickly, gesturing toward the grand entrance. "Please, come inside. We have a 1982 Château Margaux breathing in the cellar and the chef has outdone himself with the roast."

As the heavy mahogany front doors closed behind them, Marcus felt a wave of absolute euphoria wash over him. Everything had fallen into place with mathematical precision. Chloe was gone, discarded like old drywall; her mother was a helpless, broke widow crying in some run-down kitchen; and Arthur Sterling was sitting at his dining table.

The Managing Partner position, with its two-million-dollar annual salary and executive stock options, was within his grasp.

Inside the dining room, the table was a masterpiece of opulence. Ten-thousand-dollar crystal chandeliers cast warm light over gold-rimmed china, sterling silver cutlery, and sprawling displays of autumn flowers.

The caterers began serving the first course: butternut squash bisque infused with white truffles.

Marcus raised his crystal wine glass. "A toast. To leadership, vision, and the bold decisions that separate the extraordinary from the common."

"Hear, hear," Sylvia beamed, clinking her glass against Veronica’s.

Arthur Sterling raised his glass slowly, looking at Marcus over the rim. "To bold decisions, Marcus. One always reaps precisely what one sows."

May you like

Marcus grinned, completely blind to the double meaning. He took a deep sip of the vintage wine, savoring the rich, velvety taste of total triumph.

The grandfather clock in the foyer chimed 1:00 PM.
