Chapter 9 - A Mother's Ultimate Betrayal Exposed

The following morning, the sun broke through the storm clouds, casting a golden glow over the Greenwich estate.
Federal agents and private forensic accountants had spent the entire night tearing through Wendy's guest cottage, turning up a treasure trove of incriminating evidence that laid bare the full, sickening scope of the conspiracy.
In the master suite upstairs, Fiona was sitting on our bed, eating a plate of fresh chocolate chip waffles made by Maria, while Buster the golden retriever rested his heavy chin on her lap. Her color had returned, and for the first time in months, the heavy shadow of fear was completely gone from her eyes.
"Daddy?" Fiona asked, looking up as I walked into the room. "Is Grandma really gone?"
I sat on the edge of the bed and wrapped my arms around her. "Grandma is gone, peanut. And she is never, ever coming back to hurt you or scare you again. You are safe. Mommy is safe. Everything is going to be okay."
Fiona leaned against my chest, letting out a long, contented sigh. "I'm glad you canceled your plane, Daddy."
"I will always cancel the plane for you, baby," I promised, kissing the top of her head. "Always."
Leaving Fiona in Maria's loving care, Jessi and I drove down to the Federal Courthouse in New Haven, where Marcus and the Assistant U.S. Attorney were waiting for us in a private conference room.
On the table sat three thick binders of certified evidence.
"David, Jessi," the federal prosecutor said, extending a hand. "I want to personally assure you that Julian Sterling, Wendy Vance, and four other co-conspirators have been indicted on twenty-eight federal counts, including wire fraud, aggravated identity theft, child exploitation, conspiracy to commit kidnapping, and attempted murder."
"What about the probate trust?" Jessi asked.
The prosecutor smiled gently, sliding a sealed envelope across the table. "Greenwich Hospital unsealed Fiona's certified neonatal records at dawn. The genetic sequencing was conducted under federal supervision. David is confirmed as Fiona’s 100% biological father, without a shadow of scientific or legal doubt."
Jessi let out a sob of pure vindication, clutching the certified report to her chest.
"Furthermore," Marcus added, pulling up a digital dossier on the screen, "we uncovered the safe in Wendy's cottage. Arthur—Jessi’s father—didn't die broke."
Jessi looked up, stunned. "What?"
"Wendy systematically poisoned Arthur over a fourteen-month period using low-dose digitalis to mimic heart failure," Marcus revealed, his voice grim. "She forged his will, liquidated his real estate holdings, and hid twelve million dollars in offshore shell corporations to fund Julian's return. She wasn't an impoverished widow, Jessi. She was a cold-blooded sociopath who eliminated her husband because he discovered her illicit contact with Julian three years ago."

The room fell into stunned silence. Jessi stared at the screen, tears of shock filling her eyes as she realized the true depth of the evil that had lived under our roof.
"The state of Connecticut has exhumed Arthur's remains for full toxicological verification," the prosecutor stated. "Wendy Vance is facing first-degree capital murder charges. She will never see the outside of a maximum-security prison cell for the rest of her natural life."
