Chapter 14 - Healing the Scars of Deceit

In the months that followed, our estate underwent a complete transformation.
We tore down the guest cottage entirely, replacing it with a beautiful, sunlit botanical greenhouse and a massive playground designed entirely by Fiona, complete with a custom wooden treehouse, zip-line, and butterfly garden.
We established the Arthur Vance Memorial Foundation, dedicating fifteen million dollars to supporting children traumatized by domestic abuse and family exploitation. Jessi threw herself into running the foundation with a passion and joy that brought the light permanently back into her eyes.
Fiona blossomed. With the threat gone, she returned to her vibrant, hilarious self. Breakfast once again became a comedy show filled with high-spirited debates about waffles, pancake diplomacy, and secret bacon handoffs to Buster.
Every weekend, I made sure my calendar was completely clear. No acquisitions, no board meetings, no private jets could ever compete with tea parties in the treehouse, soccer games on the lawn, and family boat rides across the Long Island Sound.
One sunny Saturday afternoon, as Jessi and I sat on the patio watching Fiona teach Buster how to fetch a frisbee, Jessi leaned over and took my hand.
"Do you know what today is, David?" she asked with a radiant smile.
"The day you beat me in tennis?" I teased.
"No," Jessi laughed, placing my hand gently over her stomach. "Today is the day we found out Fiona is going to be a big sister."

I stared at her, my heart overflowing with an overwhelming wave of pure happiness. I pulled Jessi into my arms, spinning her around on the grass as Fiona ran over, giggling and hugging both our legs while Buster barked joyfully around us.
Our family was whole. Our foundation was unbreakable.
