Chapter 8 - The Trap Behind the Medical Clinic

The rain poured down in blinding sheets, drumming against the stone pillars of the portico. Julian stood with his suppressed pistol aimed directly at my chest, his eyes cold, manic, and utterly desperate.

"You really are a coward, Julian," I said, not backing down an inch. "You couldn't face your debts eight years ago, and you can't face the truth today."

"Shut up!" Julian barked, cocking the hammer of the gun. "You have sixty seconds to open the front door and bring Fiona out here, or I paint this porch with your brains. My men have jammed all cellular signals within a two-mile radius. No police are coming. Nobody knows we're here."

"Are you sure about that?" I asked quietly.

Julian frowned, a flicker of uncertainty crossing his aristocratic face. "What are you talking about?"

Suddenly, the pitch-black night was illuminated by blinding white stadium floodlights.

Four armored tactical BearCat vehicles burst through the tree line along the perimeter of the estate, their massive steel grilles crashing over the estate hedges. High-intensity spotlights locked onto Julian's private contractors, blinding them completely.

"FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION! DROP YOUR WEAPONS! DROP YOUR WEAPONS AND GET ON THE GROUND NOW!"

A booming voice shattered the rainstorm over a tactical loudspeaker.

Julian’s hired mercenaries instantly realized they were outgunned, surrounded, and trapped. One by one, they dropped their assault rifles onto the wet gravel, raising their hands in surrender as dozens of tactical FBI agents and SWAT officers swarmed the driveway, tackling the contractors to the ground and securing them in zip-ties.

Julian’s face turned an ugly shade of gray. His hand shook as he kept the pistol pointed at me. "No... no! This isn't happening! I have the court order!"

"Your corrupt judge was arrested twenty minutes ago in Hartford, Julian," Marcus Cole's voice rang out as he walked up the portico steps, his own sidearm drawn and trained squarely on Julian's forehead. "The Massachusetts lab technician you bribed sang like a bird the second we put the fraud charges on the table. Drop the gun, Sterling. It's over."

Julian’s eyes darted frantically between Marcus, the swarming federal agents, and me. In a final, desperate spasm of insanity, he pulled the trigger.

I reacted instantly.

I sidestepped Julian's line of fire, grabbed his wrist with both hands, and twisted violently downward. The gunshot discharged harmlessly into the stone floor, chipping the marble. With a fluid, brutal motion, I drove my elbow straight into Julian’s jaw.

The bone cracked with a sickening crunch. Julian stumbled backward, spitting blood, and collapsed onto the rain-slicked steps.

Marcus was on him in a heartbeat, planting a heavy tactical boot in the center of Julian's back and wrenching his arms behind him. The cold steel of handcuffs clicked tightly around Julian's wrists.

Julian thrashed on the wet stone, screaming curses through his broken jaw. "You won't keep me locked up! I am a Sterling! My family owns this state! I'll buy my way out before sunrise!"

Jessi walked down the steps, stopping directly above her former fiancé. She looked down at him not with anger, but with absolute, cold disgust.

"You aren't a Sterling anymore, Julian," Jessi said, her voice steady and clear above the storm. "You are just a ghost who forgot he was dead."

Two federal agents hauled Julian to his feet and dragged him down the driveway toward an armored transport vehicle, throwing him into the back as the heavy doors slammed shut.

I turned to Jessi, pulling her into my arms. She buried her face in my chest, weeping tears of pure relief as the adrenaline drained from our bodies.

"It's over, Jessi," I whispered into her hair. "They will never touch our family again."
