Chapter 10 - The Blackmail Network Collapses

With Wendy and Julian behind bars, the federal hammer fell swiftly upon their entire network of conspirators.
Over the next forty-eight hours, the FBI executed coordinated search warrants across three states. The corrupt family court judge in Hartford was stripped of his bench and taken into custody on federal bribery charges. The private medical clinic in Boston that had manufactured the fraudulent DNA swabs was shut down, its chief geneticist arrested for falsifying medical records in a federal proceeding.
Julian Sterling's ninety-million-dollar dynasty trust was officially declared null and void by the probate court due to criminal fraud. The entire fortune was liquidated and transferred to the State Victims of Crime Compensation Fund and various pediatric charities across New England.
Julian himself was held without bail in a high-security federal detention center. His arrogant swagger was completely gone, replaced by the hollow, broken reality of a man facing thirty years to life in federal prison with no fortune, no allies, and no escape.
That evening, Jessi and I stood in the guest cottage as our maintenance team packed up Wendy's remaining belongings into cardboard boxes to be handed over to federal evidence storage.
Jessi walked over to the fireplace mantel, picked up a framed photograph of her father, Arthur, and gently wiped the dust from the glass.
"Dad tried to warn me about her," Jessi said softly, her voice filled with bittersweet grief. "Before he died, he told me that Mom had a darkness in her that could destroy anything good. I thought he was just being bitter from their arguments. I was so blind, David."
I walked up behind Jessi, wrapping my arms around her waist and resting my chin on her shoulder. "You weren't blind, Jessi. You have a good, loving heart. You wanted to believe your mother had goodness in her. That’s not a weakness—that’s who you are. But we protect that heart now."

Jessi turned in my arms, looking into my eyes with deep, unshakeable devotion. "I don't know what I would have done without you, David. You saved our daughter. You saved our family."
"We saved each other," I said gently, leaning down to press my lips against hers.
