Chapter 13 - Handcuffs, Confessions, and Broken Masks

Two weeks later, the formal federal plea hearings commenced at the United States District Court in New Haven.
Jessi and I sat in the front row of the gallery, our hands tightly interlaced, watching as Julian Sterling and Wendy Vance were led into the courtroom in bright orange jumpsuits, their hands and feet chained with heavy iron shackles.
Julian looked haggard, his face hollow, his jaw wired shut with surgical metal from our fight on the portico. He refused to look at the gallery, staring blankly down at the defense table as the federal judge read through the mountain of charges.
Wendy looked completely broken. The arrogant, aristocratic facade was entirely gone, replaced by the pathetic reality of a disgraced, convicted felon.
When the judge asked for their pleas, Julian's defense attorney spoke in a trembling voice: "Guilty on all counts, Your Honor."
Wendy broke down into pathetic sobs, barely able to choke out the word: "Guilty."
The judge looked down from the bench with unyielding disgust.
"Julian Sterling, for your monstrous campaign of fraud, extortion, child endangerment, and violent conspiracy, I sentence you to forty-five years at the United States Penitentiary, Florence High, without the possibility of parole."
"Wendy Vance, for the calculated murder of your husband Arthur Vance and the heinous exploitation and endangerment of your own granddaughter, I sentence you to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole."
The heavy wooden gavel slammed down against the bench with a resounding CRACK.

Julian and Wendy were led away through the heavy steel holding doors, their chains clanking against the floor, disappearing forever into the depths of the federal prison system.
Jessi let out a deep, cleansing breath, resting her head against my shoulder. The nightmare that had haunted her for eight long years was finally, completely over.
