Chapter 9 - The Truth Behind the Bentley

At seven o'clock that evening, the elevator doors opened, and the elite of the city poured into the grand ballroom.

Flashbulbs exploded as senators, foreign ambassadors, and multi-billionaire tech titans stepped into what looked like a fairytale realm of ice and white blossoms. Murmurs of awe rippled through the crowd.

Lily stood near the back of the hall, dressed in a stunning, midnight-emerald gown that Arthur had personally had delivered to her hotel room. She looked magnificent—graceful, poised, and radiant.

Arthur Vance walked across the room, completely ignoring the socialites and board members who tried to flag him down. His slate-gray eyes were locked entirely on Lily.

"You outdid yourself," Arthur murmured, handing her a flute of sparkling cider. "The entire room is talking about you."

"I did it for my mother," Lily replied softly, looking into his eyes. "And... I did it to prove to you that your faith in me wasn't misplaced. But Arthur... you promised me the truth. You said my father was your mentor. What happened to him?"

Arthur’s expression turned somber. He guided her out onto the private terrace overlooking the glittering Manhattan skyline, away from the prying ears of the party. The cold night wind whipped around them, but under Arthur’s heavy coat, which he draped over her bare shoulders, Lily felt completely warm.

"Fifteen years ago, I was twenty-two, reckless, and bankrupt," Arthur began, his voice heavy with memory. "Your father, Richard Sterling, was the founder of Sterling Bio-Pharma. He held patents for revolutionary lung-regeneration treatments—the very medicine your mother needed. He was a brilliant scientist and a kind man."

Arthur took a deep breath. "His business partner, Jonathan Sterling—Victoria’s father—and Julian Cross conspired to steal his patents. They framed Richard for corporate espionage, drained his bank accounts, and drove him out of his own company. When your father threatened to go to the federal authorities with proof of their embezzlement, his car was forced off the bridge into the freezing Hudson River."

Lily gasped, her hand covering her mouth as hot tears burned her eyes. "His death wasn't an accident..."

"No," Arthur said, his eyes turning to cold steel. "It was murder. I swore on his grave that I would build Vance Global into an empire powerful enough to crush the men who killed him. And that night outside the Grand Meridian... when I saw you freezing on that curb, wearing Richard's locket... I realized that destiny had brought his rightful heir back to me."
