Chapter 6 - Whispers in the Marble Halls

The next morning, Lily stepped out of a yellow cab and looked up at the Vance Global Tower—an eighty-story monolith of dark blue glass and steel piercing the clouds.

She wore a simple, elegant dark green dress she had purchased that morning, her long auburn hair pinned neatly behind her ears, and the silver locket hidden securely beneath the fabric of her collar.

When she stepped into the breathtaking marble lobby, heads immediately turned.

In a world populated by executives in thousand-dollar suits and socialites draped in designer labels, Lily carried an unmistakable air of authenticity. She didn't have the manufactured perfection of the corporate elite, but she carried herself with a quiet, grounded dignity forged in the fires of survival.

"Look at her," a sharp, venomous voice whispered near the elevators. "Is that the flower girl Arthur picked off the street? She looks like she belongs in a soup kitchen."

The speaker was Victoria Sterling—a stunning, ice-cold blonde wearing an ivory Chanel suit. Victoria was the lead marketing director at Vance Global, the daughter of billionaire real estate tycoon Jonathan Sterling, and a woman who had spent the last three years desperately trying to secure an engagement ring from Arthur Vance.

Standing beside Victoria was Julian Cross, Arthur’s ambitious chief financial officer, whose calculating eyes swept over Lily with undisguised contempt.

"Arthur’s eccentricities are getting out of hand," Julian muttered quietly. "Giving a street vendor the Solstice Gala contract is an insult to our high-profile donors. Don't worry, Victoria. She'll fail miserably, and when she does, Arthur will look like a fool in front of the board."

Lily heard the whispers, but she didn't flinch. When you have spent years enduring the sneers of wealthy pedestrians while freezing on street corners, corporate gossip feels like nothing more than a mild breeze.

She took the private elevator to the top floor, where the double oak doors to the executive suite opened to reveal Arthur Vance standing by a floor-to-ceiling window, looking out over the sprawling city.

He turned as she entered. In the bright morning sunlight, he looked even more formidable. His dark eyes locked onto hers with an intensity that made her pulse quicken.

"Miss Sterling," Arthur said, gesturing toward a large conference table covered in architectural blueprints and floral catalogs. "Welcome to Vance Global."

"Thank you, Mr. Vance," Lily replied, maintaining a professional distance. "Before we discuss arrangements of white orchids and winter roses, I have one question."

"Ask it."

Lily stepped forward, her green eyes blazing with fierce resolve. "Why me? There are a hundred elite floral designers in this city who would kill for this contract. Why give it to a girl who was selling wilted lilies on a curb forty-eight hours ago?"

Arthur walked toward her, stopping just a foot away. The air between them crackled with an undeniable, heavy tension.

"Because the elite designers design for applause, Lily," Arthur said quietly, using her first name for the first time. "You design because you know what it means when something fragile fights to survive in the cold. And because... you and I have unfinished business with this city."
