Chapter 5 - An Unexpected Invitation to the High Tower

The morning sun rose over the city like a pale gold coin, cutting through the winter fog.

Lily stood outside First National Bank at exactly 8:45 AM. When the heavy glass doors unlocked at nine, she walked up to the teller window with her heart pounding against her ribs like a trapped bird. She slid the $100,000 check across the counter, fully expecting the teller to press an alarm button or call armed guards.

Instead, the teller’s eyes widened as she scanned the signature. She immediately picked up the telephone, spoke in hushed, reverent tones, and within two minutes, the branch manager himself—a man in a crisp pinstriped suit—emerged from his corner office, bowing slightly.

"Miss Sterling? Please, come into my private office. Mr. Vance’s executive office contacted us first thing this morning to ensure this transaction was handled with the highest priority."

Forty minutes later, Lily walked out of the bank with a cashier’s check for the slumlord, five thousand dollars in crisp cash for immediate medical supplies, and an active checking account containing the remaining ninety-four thousand dollars.

For the first time in five years, she felt like she could draw air all the way down into the bottom of her lungs.

She immediately hired a private medical transport service to take her mother to the St. Jude Medical Pavilion—the premier respiratory facility in the state. She bought Noah two warm winter coats, three pairs of sturdy shoes, and paid for his entire school semester.

She paid off Pike, watching with deep satisfaction as the bully’s jaw dropped at the sight of the official bank draft.

But just as she returned to the small apartment to pack their few remaining belongings, a sleek black town car pulled up to the curb outside. A woman in a tailored navy pantsuit stepped out, holding an embossed leather folder.

She climbed the stairs and knocked gently on Lily’s door.

"Miss Lily Sterling?" the woman asked, offering a professional business card. "My name is Claire Adams. I am the Chief of Staff for Vance Global Enterprises."

Lily felt a sudden chill. "What does Mr. Vance want from me? He already gave me more money than I could ever repay."

"Mr. Vance does not view that money as a loan or a gift, Miss Sterling. He views it as a retainer," Claire explained, opening the folder to reveal a formal employment contract. "Mr. Vance is hosting the annual Winter Solstice Gala at the Vance Tower next Friday—the largest corporate charity event in the country. He has personally requested that you manage and design the entire floral installation for the event."

Lily blinked in disbelief. "Me? I’m a street vendor. I buy scrap stems from the wholesale market and tie them with cheap ribbon."

"Mr. Vance was very specific," Claire said with a faint smile. "He stated that you possess an eye for raw beauty that no high-priced Manhattan decorator can match. The contract includes an operational budget of fifty thousand dollars and a personal design fee of twenty-five thousand. Will you accept?"

Lily looked at the contract. Her mother’s warnings echoed in her mind: The people who destroyed your father are in those towers.

If Arthur Vance was connected to her father's downfall, walking into his headquarters was stepping into the lion's den. But if she wanted to uncover the truth—if she wanted to know why her father had died in obscurity while billionaires ruled the skyline—she needed to get close to Arthur Vance.

"I accept," Lily said firmly.
